Course Reviews

Great layout with smooth greens. The conditions of bunkers and fairways are a little scruffy so you might want to play winter rules. Nice scenery and good value.

When new this course was a diamond hidden in the ruble, it has since deteriorated into only fair quality muni course. lack of support from most of the local population and city ownership keeps it operating on a shoestring budget and has little chance of getting better. after a rainy week the course will play nicely in the summer but if it's been dry be prepared for hardpan dirt fairways with spots of crabgrass to reward drives down the middle. the tee boxes are the worst ive ever seen- anywhere. this is mainly due to the lack of involvement by the people running the place. they just leave them in the same spot till the grass has no chance to recover, resulting into them looking like pock marked waste bunkers on a mound. mowing seems to only take place when someone remembers to do it as ive hit into shin high weeds in the middle of the fairway. bring lots of balls if you hit wayward shots as the waist high weeds separating holes will devour them making a recovery shot something of fantasy.
play when there is a special rate or something, full rate times make other courses in the area more attractive.

I just played this course yesterday. The condition of the course right now is really poor. I was told this is the result of lack of rain and being unable to draw enough water from their system to water the fairways. Fairways and tee boxes are perhaps the worst I've ever experienced. I hope this situation is temporary.

I have really enjoyed Vista Links when I've played it previously, but that was a couple of years ago. The layout is really interesting, with a wide variety of holes and really pretty views on the course (when fairways get enough water) and of the surrounding mountains. I found the comment by another reviewer that powerlines "dominated" the view on the front 9 to be odd. They're there - but they're not obtrusive at all.

I will say that they've made sure the greens and their approach areas have been watered. The greens are a little spongy and on the slow side, but are in excellent condition.

Another oddity was that the clubhouse & cart barn were closed up by 6:15. I'd left my cart & returned 10 minutes later because I'd forgotten my scorecard, and there wasn't a sole around to help me.

Must have played this course at the wrong time...crabgrass all over the fairways and powerlines dominating the views on the front nine. Lots of nice mountain views but for the price...was highly annoyed at the conditions of the fairways. My playing partner thought the course was gorgeous...so guess we all see things through different perspectives. I drove several hours (not just to play here), but would not make the effort to return. Can imagine that fall would be breathtaking though...as long as the crabgrass goes!

I consider this my home course. It is a newer course, but always in excellent shape and the staff is really great and respectful. I does have a tendency to have gnats and are a little worrisome, but thats why we have deet. Overall you should play.

WOW- haven't played a course like this in a long while. Grass in the fairways, sand in the bunkers, clean!

This a great scenery course with lots of wildlife sightings. It has great fairways ahd some deep sand bunkers on a few holes.

Beatiful views - lot's of bugs - Nats on every green - very distracting - a little expensive - condition is fair - over watered fairways.

A Great Course

Drove over from Roanoke on Sunday, October 29 to play this course and it was worth the trip. As one turns off Route 60 and heads up the drive to the clubhouse, the beauty of the course is immediately evident. Although the proshop is small, the staff could not have been nicer. There is a large driving range which runs along the first hole which allows every club in the bag to be hit. The front side is easier than the back, but the landing areas off the tee on the entire course are generally wide and forgiving. The wind was blowing around 25 miles per hour and we decided to play from the blue tees (6447 yards). The rating from the blues is 72.2 with a rating of 136, however, it played much eaiser (my home course has a rating of 125 with a slope of 70.6 and I think it is a harder layout). There are five par fours under 360 yards and the par three are relatively short. If you hit the ball straight, there are plenty of opportunities to score. Although the course is very open, there are areas of thick grass off the fairways and woods which can snag an errant shot. In addition, there are a number of well placed bunkers along and, in some cases, in the middle of the fairways (some have very steep faces and are deep). The greens have a good deal of undulations and if you are on the wrong level putting can be tricky - the good news is that the greens roll true and were in perfect shape. The course has a feel similar to Poplar Grove in Amherst (another special course), but it plays much more like a links course. Most of the holes are open in the front allowing one to play a number of approach shots. I really enjoyed this course and am disappointed that I waited until the end of the season to play. It is a course to be enjoyed by all levels of players. It is a gem and I will be back.

Great course-just off interstate-honest people too!

Super track-fast greens-small clubhouse. I left my car door open by mistake, (had a lot of good stuff in open view) played 4 hrs of golf., car not touched.

Will be one of the best in Virginia with a little more maturity

excellent course from all tees. Real challenge from black. Very close to a true links style course, only thing missing is ocean.

What a great deal!

Perfect conditions from tee to green. Wide open layout makes for a pleasant round of golf. Probably the best greens I have ever putted. Perfect conditions, and they really roll true. Also a heck of a deal, as it's less than $30 on the weekends. I wish I lived closer. This was the cats meow!!!
