Hawks Creek Golf Club, Fort Worth, TX

This course is currently embroiled in social media battles with some large groups of golfers. I had been hesitant to criticize the course until I played there today and encountered the first aggressively rude and confrontational staff I have ever seen. I normally give course staffs a lot of latitude for the amount of grief they must absorb, but these guys were issuing the grief. I brought my staff of 11 here for an outing, and we have all agreed never again. We would have been a group of 12, but one of my staff refused to go to the place already. Boy was he right. If you want to be sneered at to play a below average course, this place will deliver!

Played Hawk's Creek this past weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised. First off, I will agree with previous reviews that paying prime weekend rate for this course would not be a good value, but if you take advantage of the reduced twilight rates or specials, it's definitely worth it. The course is situated adjacent to the naval base; the fighter jets taking off is a very entertaining feature of this course. The scenery is decent, and the layout offers a very unique round of golf.

The condition of the course was decent, but nothing to rave about. The greens were abnormally fast and firm for late fall, and the fairways looked like they had seen heavy play recently, even though the course was very slow on a Sunday afternoon. I am normally fairly lenient on condition, but this course could definitely benefit from tighter upkeep, especially if you are charging $60+ during peak hours. That being said, every fairway, green, and tee box were in more than playable condition; just don't expect Cowboy's-type upkeep here. Club selection cannot be taken for granted here, as there are multiple holes that require less than driver off the tee; I found the course to be relatively short in general. You will find a decent amount of slope, a few blind shots, and abnormally large bunkers. Not the best course for a beginner, but will be a good test for a mid to low-handicapper.

All in all, a very nice round of golf. This course is definitely more fun to play than the muni courses in Fort Worth, but you could get more for your money elsewhere.

Course was in great shape for this time of the year. While we played, I saw employees filling in divots, blowing leaves from the fairways and ensuring that players maintained the proper pace. I had not played the course in several years but I will return very soon. I highly recommend the course and I agree with AvidGolfer that the clubhouse needs to be renovated.

Good course, good value for $60 in the DFW area. It plays like an old country club course. Not too long but a fun and challening course.

This course is not for the faint of heart or pocket. If you miss a fairway be prepared to search vigorously for your ball. I've put the ball 10 ft from the green a couple of times and ended up having to record a lost ball because the stuff was just way too thick to find my ball. However, the course is very beautiful and very fun to play (unless you're a beginner or not on top of your game that round). I think the price reflects the fact that it's the best public golf course located in the middle of Fort Worth. If you live in Fort Worth, save this course as an occasional treat. If you're just in town for a couple of days and have to play golf, I would reccomend playing here just so you'll leave Fort Worth with a good impression.

Hawks Creek 10/06

This course is in good shape and really nicer than the old Carswell Course was. I found it confusing in its layout from hole to hole and to walk it would be a challenge with the length between holes and the hills that roll along its track. The greens are not in the best shape but for bentgrass in Tx and during a drought they are about as good as they could be. I am not a fan of the bentgrass though, it gets too many ball marks and burn marks on it for me. I really enjoyed playing the course and will be back for sure, but I would look very hard for a discounted rate. At $60 this is not a good value. I would expect a bit more than this course offers for that kind of fee. I think Southern Oaks is a better course and that one comes in under $50. Still for Fort Worth, this course is not bad, just pricey.

The tee boxes were in great shape, the fairways were very good, I just did not see many of them. You have to really think about your shots, not every hole is a hole you want your driver for. Unless you are good at 40 yard approaches, I would hit my 3 wood or 4 iron more often.

The practice area is excellent. Not many places have a large driving range that accomodates lots of golfers, a short game area with real green and bunkers and up to 100 yard distance shots, and a very unique putting area. This is definately one of the best practice areas I have seen around here.

The two best holes, 9th and 18th, the twins. They leave you wanting more of this course as they approach the beautiful clubhouse overlooking the elevated greens. I did not do those two justice.

Great course, would be a regular for me at $50 instead of the $60 I paid. If you can go during the week, it is definately worth the $45 they charge.
