great course could be better with more money from the city

Reviewed July 20, 2009

Just played this course with my beginning golfing sons. It was great fun, because of the tight, tree lined fairways and elevation changes. Lost and found a lot of balls. Fairways were in very good shape, especially for a very hot mid-summer. Greens were pretty bad, but playable. They have recently installed irrigation that is expected to greatly improve the greens. The course wasn't crowded. Clubhouse is bare-bones, but then, it's a public course. I'm grateful for the value and that its maintenance is improving.

First of all, I can't begin to understand why the city would even consider closing this course. This place is a masterpiece. If they would throw half as much money into it as they did to Galloway, this would be a 4-star golf digest rating. The scenery is great, the course is difficult, but not unplayable. This is easily the 2nd best Memphis city course (with Galloway being 1) and with a little more TLC it could challenge for #1.

Overall golf experience is better than Galloway for my moeny...less crowded and a lot of elevation changes makes it more fun. Reminds me of a lot of the courses I played in high school in east Tennessee in terms of elevation changes. Its similar to T.O. Fuller State Park in that way.

I rode 18 on a Sunday afternoon for $21. Great bang for the buck here.

Played recently. Glad it was only $21 for 18 holes. You can land the ball in the fairway but when you drive up to it it is in the rough. Greens tiny and hard. Broke about 13 tees when I usually break 3 or 4.

I LOVE this course. Some friends told me the course was "dangerous" years ago and didn't want to try it. Well, it was real inexpensive and close to home so I gave it a try. Then I got the friends who told me about its past to give it a try. This course is now our course of choice. Looks like there's a lot of money getting pumped into the course for improvements, including a new clubhouse. Very pretty, very challenging with narrow fairways in a lot of places. All in all, an EXCELLENT value!

Neglected by the city

If one is a beginer and has never played on another course, if you learn to keep your T shot and others in the fairway at will play well at other "open" courses. The city has neglected this gem of a layout due to politics etc.. for years. A new ball washer has not been placed in 15yrs. The layout and scenery of this course is the best of ALL the muni courses in Memphis. The greens suffer a bit due to trees not being cut back. The consolation is that everyone has to putt on em. As it gets hotter and the poanna dies they improve. Some of us regulars fertalize and poison out of our own pocket, as the city provides nothing. The course is surrounded by the woods w/ rolling terrain offering all golf shots. Red fox, hawks, deer etc.. can be seen at times during play and fresh water springs are present. (used in the moonshinin days, suiting for Frayser) One cannot see the other fairways, only the one you are on. So hit em straight, cause the jail house here is Alcatraz! Every Thur eve at 5pm this summer (started 4-12-07) there is a blind draw scramble. Some young guns showed up from Cordova last year and love the course ...enough to be sprinkled around the foursomes. So even if you can double bogie as good as me, come on out and have some fun for 9 holes. Help support an ole gem, if not but for the sake of the GREAT game of golf and to show the city we will stand up for Davy Crockett GC! If any of you know Buddy McEwen, he will be retiring as his health is not good. So for a guy that was like a Harvey Penick to alot of us, lets stand together!

12-1-2007: Buddy McEwen, Golf Instructor, political debater, pub room conversationist, going to Univ. of Memphis football, fellow Frayserite, but most of all MY FRIEND. The impressions you have made on me will last my lifetime. God bless you and thanks for ALL the memories. Your pal and as you said.."alter ego" For he was a jolly good fellow!! See you at the Tee Time of destiny. "Through the green." This final round is done. Let the gallery cheer for BUDDY!
