Played September 2011. Course in great shape. Greens lightning quick champion bermuda with plenty of contour and tough pin placements. This is a gem of a course and very well manicured. Say thank you to Justin Timberlake for placing this course here every day. Worth at least twice the price if located in some other big city. Designed well enough to feel like very few people are on the course even when several are. Out in the country feel is great.

Played August 2011...course in absolutely great shape. For the end of August you will not find better greens. They are extremely, extremely fast. Well worth the $71 fee they charge. We also had Timberlake in our 4some (jk)

I've only played once but really liked the course. Fairways were in great shape (even after the flood), greens were really fast but they all rolled true. A little pricey, but also really nice.

Hidden Gem

I have played Big Creek for a number of years and the back 9 is the hardest 9 holes out of the courses in West Shelby Co. The front is flat long dog legs and one w/ a 10 handicap or a long hitter can get there in 2. I just circle my pars, lol. The Pro Shop is now closed but the eats and cold ones are there. The course is maintained very good and it has always had greens that rival the Navy Base course. Check the price...sometimes there is a $22 speacial during the week for 18 and a cart. You can't beat that w/ a stick. Get ready to yank it and crank it on the front then the back is a totally different course, much like Crockett or Forest Hill.

Great Track - Awesome Championship Bermuda Large Greens - Amentities Poorly Maintained

Hello, my name is William Allen and I have played this course as many times as anyone in Memphis, and the original Owner was a friend of my family. Dr. Mitchell was a friend of my dad, Dr. Allen, and I attended school with his son. This course was a dream for Dr. Mitchell as it opened as a hopeful private club with tennis courts, swimming pool, driving range and hopes that people would buy lots near or surrounding the course and build homes. As time progressed, it became clear that this was not happening mostly because of the location. The city was not growing in this direction (North of Memphis) nearly as much as it was towards the East (Cordova and Germantown) and many people who actually joined initially went delinquent somewhat quickly. Soon thereafter, this club turned semi-private in an attempt to increase revenue, but this too did not save the unavoidable result. Next to come was a fully public golf course and even that did not create the needed revenue to make this course a success. I will spare the gory financial details that followed but eventually this course was sold at a rock bottom price to an outside agent and still the course after several more sales has not been profitable. Reports from many employees over time tell us that they were not getting paid on time. Sadly, now the tennis courts are the fenced in cart holder, the pool is completely in ruins, the course is not maintained properly, and I am so hurt that no one realizes the potential gold mine here.
However, with all that said, I still love this golf course. The opening hole is a great starting hole that doglegs left around a lake which borders the hole on the left all the way from 100 yards out, and wraps around the back of the green. The 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th holes involve water bordering hazards, as do the 11th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 18th holes.
The front 9 is quite flat and fairly open, while the back tightens up considerably starting at the 12th hole, a very long double-dogleg type par 5.
There are 2 strong left doglegs (1st and 17th) and 4 slight dogs to the left (4th, 10th, 14th, and 16th).
The 9th hole is the only true doggy to the right.
Beginning at the 13th par 3 180+, and ending at the very tough 15th, the course includes some fairly formidable elevation changes, as the course flattens out again at the 16th thru the 18th.
This course can be stretched to well over 7200 yards from the tips of the tees to the back of the very large greens, although she plays much tougher when the pins are nearer the fronts because most every green tilts quite a lot from high in the rears to low in the fronts, and when these championship bermuda greens are cut low, the speed of these downhill putts are scary to say the least.
However, in regard to the 7200 yards, it plays shorter than this in the drier months as the fairways are fairly hard and one gets lots of bounce and roll on their drives, however, when it is wet or quite damp, this yardage is quite real.
Please do not evaluate my description of the hardships of this course to keep you from coming to play one of the best tracks in the city because this is a great layout. Once on the course, you will really love it. As I said, I just know all of the history from the inception of the former Woodstock Hills golf course, and although Memphis has not supported this course as much as hoped, that could all be changed if someone would come in and fully renovate this place turning it into a first class venue throughout as now I believe Dr. Mitchell's dream was ahead of its time, and perhaps now, with the proper investment and amenities could be one of Memphis' finest!

Great Course, Great Price!

Big Creek is worth its price to come and play. The greens are by far the best in town as far as public courses go. The scenery is immaculate and the course presents a great challenge. It will better the average person's golf game.
