Course Reviews

With all of the great courses to play in the Myrtle Beach area, there is no reason to play this one. The scenery is non-existent, the course just winds through a neighborhood of houses, and it appears that most of the old growth trees were removed to build the course. The layout is unimaginative, and it felt like the same shot all day long - try to get as long as possible off the tee, and then try to drop an iron over the bunker that was inevitably placed in front of the green.

The folks were friendly, the price was right, and the course was in very good condition. Still, I won't be going back.

My wife surprised me with a round of golf Father's Day weekend that included 3 of my closest friends. When she booked the tee time the young man on the phone did not tell her that the greens were just punched nor did they tell us upon arrival at the facility. We went ahead and played since my wife went to so much time and effort to put this together. My wife was understandably upset when I told her afterward and she called the golf course the next day. They gave her the manager's contact information because it was his day off. However, due to our hectic schedules we were unable to call again until the following week. To say that the manager, Steve, was rude and obnoxious is an understatement. Needless to say, we will never play that course again and make sure that all of our family, friends and coworkers know about the treatment that we received.

I have played here every time I go to myrtle Beach. Very nice people and they let my nephew play for free. The course is tough with waste areas on almost ever hole. It is a must play for any one going to Myrtle Beach

Nice course. It is probably the most difficult course I have played. If you miss the green on your approach, you are pretty much screwed. Nice conditions made it worth while.

Starter was a jerk. We did show up a few minutes late (but finished the round in under the time mentioned in the card). At the turn, he called me cheap for not tipping him. I liek to tip at the end of teh round, as I can actually see how nice the people are. (at Palmetto greens right up the road, the cart lady was so friendly i gave her a 10 before I left) We told him this and he was a jerk about it. At the end of the round, I went to tip him and he said "keep it". I would never play here again. He was a complete ***** and no one needs that. Southern Hospitality my a......

Nice Course.Enjoyed the round even though it was very wet the day we were there. Would like to play again when dry

Lots of sand waste areas that also double as cart paths .... water comes into play on a few holes ... does not seem to drain that well ... wet & squishy fairways from overnite rain .. would play again in more favorable conditions ... an excellent course to play on the way in/out of the Grand Strand !!

i thought the course was excellent, we paid $47 twilight on 7-19-2006 and the course was in good shape.

Not quite a cut above but there is potential

I just played this course in early June 07 and I thought it was in pretty poor shape even considering the lack of rain prior to and the abundance of it that we had during that week. The layout is pretty good and the greens ran well but it's hard to get excited when you're hitting from bare dirt in the middle of the fairway on the Golfen Bear's own design. I played the back tees and it's playable and not that long. The signature 10th hole is quite simple actually and there is nothing really difficult about the course.

Overall, it's not bad if you can get a green fee around $40ish but if it was in better condition I'd be much more impressed. It's a middle of road course and there are many more at Myrtle that severely outclass this baby. If you're a high handicapper, this course may fit your liking, for those that are not, go spend some money on better courses.

A Cut Above

Played here 5-30-07, and was REALLY impressed by the course. Terrific design, even if a bit tough for us 10+ handicappers (white tees are 70.5/129). Jack makes optimal use of mounding, water, and SAND, SAND, SAND. Signature hole is #10, a relatively short par 4 (315 from the whites), with an inverted "U" shaped waste area completely surrounding the fairway, and crossing in front of the elevated, heavily contoured green. A knowledgable player would hit 5 iron inside the 150 post, then wedge it to the green....but not us heroes who absolutely must stretch for it...'nuff said! Several other very nice holes, including the island green par 3 13th. Conditions were excellent, despite the relative drought the area has suffered in the early months of 2007; kudos to the grounds crew. Pro shop is well stocked, snack bar is comfortable, snd the entire staff helpful and welcoming. Can't speak to value, since we got a reduced rate, but check into discounts and coupons. Have played in Myrtle beach for several years, but never made it out this far before (Longs, SC is about ten miles off the beach, up Route 9): it is very much worth the trip. Course is now being managed by the same folks who run the excellent Myrtle Beach National facilities, so it should remain a top-notch track. Highly recommend.

Proper test.

This is the second Nicklaus course I have played the first being St. Mellion in Cornwall and both have been a real test of ability. Does Jack keep handicap golfers in mind when building these difficult tracks, great golfer, possibly the greatest, building great golf courses, we will return to conquer it.
