I always love playing Exeter but do understand why some people have problems with it. The pace of play is notoriously bad and the greens are very slow and inconsistent. Outside of that, the course is great. A very nice design that can play quite difficult from the blue tees, with very long par 3s. The 5th hole is arguably one of the hardest par 3s in the state - an uphill 230 yard par three with trees blocking out the right side of green and OB left and long. Overall the course is in pretty good shape, would probably be top 5 public in RI if greens were a little quicker.

Exeter Country Club is by far a great track compared to other public golf courses, The layout is mixed as to the type of shots you have to play. The covered Bridge is a nice addition to the 13th hole. The staff was great, would play Exeter again. Play the par 3's from the tips and you will see how the pros play.

I have played Exeter many times over the years. It is a nice golf course at a reasonable price. They have a cool little covered bridge on the course and the course is usually in good shape. The only thing I don't love about the golf course is the greens are always a bit slow. The layout is very nice with a good blend of doglegs long and shorter holes, nice elevation changes. All in all a good day of golf. The weekend rounds can be slow if you don't start early. As far as the "girl" in the pro shop. She is the owner and I have never (in the 10-15 times I have played there) been treated poorly by her or any of the staff. But anyone can have a bad day or a bad experience. I would rate Exeter a nice solid 3 on the golf digest stimp meter.

I have played Exeter over the years and it has always been in pretty good shape. It is not fair to compare it to private clubs, because they get about 40,000 rounds per year. And to Billgolf, awfully harsh on your comments about the girl in the proshop. We do know there are two side to every story. The public can certainly get out of hand with the drinking and stupid complaints. The staff is always pleasant in my experiences, and for $35 for 18 holes, the course is a great deal. Too many naysayers out there.

I played here the other day, the course was in tough shape but it didnt compare to way way I was treated by the lady in the proshop. She was outright rude and treated my group like we meant nothing. Its a shame cause even though the course was not in the greatest shape, it still would have been worth playing if we didnt have an unfavorable experience. I agree with what everyone else says, this course would have been a pleasure if it wasnt for her. Now instead of playing here more often, myself and everyone one I talk to will never play here again. It is not worth putting up with the proshop lady.

I think the course deserves more than 2.5 stars. I had a very nice time here, while it was nothing special it was definitely much better than many other New England courses I have played. I would go back if I were in the area.

If you want to learn how not to run a golf course stop by and play a round at Exeter. From jen in the pro-shop to the carpet you putt on, its simply pathetic. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND KEEP ON DRIVING BY!! EE WHAT UP.

8 Reason not to play Exeter
1. The owner is not nice at all.
2. They treat everyone like they run Newport Country club, get over yourselves it’s a public golf course.
3. The greens are the slowest in the state, has anyone ever putted on fairway? Well go to Exeter. You cant read the greens because they are so slow.
4. The owner is way too cheap to make minor upgrades…like cutting the grass lower on the greens or putting covers on the carts (that’s right, no shade or protection from the rain, but heres the extra 20 bucks for the cart).
5. Theres not a marker on the entire course!!!! Okay they throw a few 150 markers (oh I mean bushes that you’re supposed to know mean 150?) so unless you pay 5 bucks for the course card or have a gps you are guessing your shot into the green. I honestly have never seen so few markers out there, its pathetic!!!
6. I had a tournament there where thunder/rain was in the forecast. Well we started late to bypass the first storm, then the owner puts us out there (so she can greedily make her money) and we play 2 holes before it starts down pouring again. 2 HOLES and guess what this cheapy did. Gave us a 9 hole voucher ON A WEEKDAY!!!! Gee thanks for your generosity. That is down right sad.
7. I always have this feeling like a golf course is accommodating and treats you with respect. All I seem to get here is pay your money, get out there, and leave. We at Exeter are too good to care.
8. I WILL NEVER IN MY LIFE PLAY THERE AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE WAY WE WERE TREATED.

WOW! I don't know what all of the naysayers expect for $35. I thought this course was beautiful and very well maintained. The 19th hole (bar) had a great New England feel to it. I will say that not being from the northeast, I don't feel I was treated the same as the locals, but the treatment that my group and I did recieve wasn't bad. GREAT COURSE! We will be back.

Block off 6 hours for your round of golf here. Real nice surroundings, but not worth it if you are waiting around for 10 minutes between holes. Played yesterday and there was 1 person working there - the person collecting the money. Would not go back unless they made major changes for golfers pace of play.

I made a Tee time this morning for 6:22 Sunday morning and just received a call at 3:30 that they have to cancel my Tee time because "we have a tournament that just got too big for us to handle". Good luck making your tee time with them!

C'mon, #2 in the state?

This course is a lot closer to the worst in the state than it is to the best. How can this place finish ahead of the half dozen or so Donald Ross designs in the state? While I will admit it is a very picturesque track, the layout is weak and the conditions suspect. The greens may be the worst in RI - not even Bent Grass. Add to this the fact that rounds take upward of 6 hours and its clear why I haven't been there in 20 years.

Nice Course

This is a nice course, challenging and long from the Blue Tees. Greens and traps could be in better shape.

Last review, not sure why they mentioned Quidnesset since its a private course, maybe they ment Quonsett which is not as nice as Exeter. I would not say Richmond is a better course, its different but not better. The same family owns Richmond and Exeter and they do a great job on both.
