Course Reviews

I love this course. You have to use every club in your bag. 11-18 are very challenging. They force you to put your driver away and play up short on some holes. I have played this course 10 times and have had one of me very best rounds and one of my very worst rounds. I have found the ones that don't like this course are the Long ball, Big driver guys who just want to grip it and rip it, short iron it to the green, and put for birdie. There are a lot of other courses in the area with flat, open, and not very challenging holes, but if you want a challenge, use all of the clubs that came in that set you bought than play ROCK CREEK.

I think some of the commentary of other reviewers is a bit harsh. The course does not get difficult until the 12th hole, and then you have to keep your wits about you and play seven very challenging holes. Some of them can be played with a layup, some can be played safely to a "bail out" area, so it's only on a few occasions that it's a no-chance situation. The greens are not severe and are in much better shape than other comparably priced courses in the area.

The views from the top are great and the practice areas are good. The test of a course like this is: do you want to come back? For me, the answer is yes, especially now that I've seen the holes and know how they should be played.

This place is like the "Tale of Two Courses". The front nine is wide open for the most part, well maintained and offers a decent challange. Once you cross the road to hole 12 though, look out. It's very short but has natural and man made hazards that will test your game and your nerves.
The back nine can get aggrivating too. I lost two balls that I saw for a fact bounced on the green, slowed, and then disappeared.

I will come back for sure, but maybe only to play the front nine.

Rock Creek golf course

I had always heard that golf is a great game for self-deprecating people. Do yourself a favor and schedule a post round appointment with your therapist, prior to leaving home, on the day you plan to play this course. Rock Creek is a very pretty, but ODD golf course. The front 9 can be VERY tight (target golf at it's finest), but it isn't really long. I truly enjoyed the front, which is the original course. Trouble comes when you run out of room to build a second 9, but decide to do it anyway. The first couple of holes on the back 9 are crammed in a little corner behind the parking lot. After that, you'd better put the rescue chopper on standby, because the remainder of the course is on top of the adjacent mountain-no joke. It's about a 3 minute ride, STRAIGHT UP to the next tee. Question: Can you hit an intentional fade on a 120 yard par 3? If your answer is "no", as mine was, then you are in for big numbers on the back. Errant balls are subject to striking sheer rock walls and bounding into places where a snake bite kit and a distress beacon are standard equipment. DO NOT try to climb up or down the cliffs to retrieve your pro v1! Believe me when I tell you; I think Jimmy Hoffa is down there. The upper holes are darned pretty, with some spectacular views, but the sad truth is that the only way I could hit the shots necessary to stay in play up there would be if I were playing Golden Tee on my cousin's playstation. I have to think that, with soaring gas prices, these guys will either have to eventually go with electric carts, or charge so much in cart fees that the course will become cost prohibitive. It really is too bad. If you're in the area, you really must play it once, just to say you did it. I didn't see any "I survived Rock Creek" tee shirts in the pro shop, but hey, you never know........
