Course Reviews

This course was in horrible shape. The greens have been over watered and were black or damaged in most areas. The rough was crab grass that had begun to creep into the fairways. The owner was selling personal household items in the pro shop, that had almost zero equipment. The course needs new management as it has a lot of potential but current owners are just bleeding what they can out of it.

Other than rearranging the 10th tee this course remains the same. About the only thing new here are some posts to tell you which hole you are on. The greens keeper seems to have gone crazy with the watering as there are parts of several greens which have gone black from too much water. We also found standing water in the fairways and bunkers even though the area is below normal for precip for the year.

The course actually has several good holes but they are hidden by an uncaring staff that will not marshall slow play and ownership that is putting little into improving the conditions. This group also runs Royal Oaks.

Beware playing from this point forward as the crabgrass is allowed to overwhelm the course. The maintenance and original design leaves the course weedy, wet and unremarkable.

This is a McCourse if there ever was one. The only thing that gives it even a moderate rating is the length and the lower slope is correct. Simply put the holes merge into one another since, with a few exceptions, they are all SLIGHTLY longer than average and very few stray shots are penalized. The greens are not quite defenseless since most of them are trapped a little bit more than your average course--but your approaches are really not as challenging as many courses. The 9 through 13 stretch is a little more interesting than the rest of the course. 9 is uphill and 440 into a nicely bunkered green. 10 is over water--but the water is not really close to the green and can be carried by any shot that gets up in the air. 11 is long and the slope on the fairway is to the left and then to the right. 12 is a beautiful hole--nicely elevated tee over a stream to a large green. Maybe a club-and-a-half distance change between pin placements in the front and those in the back. 13 is, supposedly, the club's signature hole. Only the longer hitters will find the stream however. Stay short of the stream and to the right. The approach from the left is a little tricky. Then you go back to cookie-cutter holes.

This course is just enough to make you think you played a round. But the "rip-it-and-hit-it" crowd will have a field day here and shorter hitters can make up the lost distance by simply knocking it square down the fairways. I don't think there is a single really difficult green here and only 13 needs to be studied.

has vastly improved conditions over last year. greens were excellent shape. best combination of soft and fast greens I've seen. traps could use rakes for walkers. It rained last night, so understandably the wetness of the traps was acceptable. fairways were in decent shape. the tee boxes needed a little more care. overall, very nice shape. a relatively open course, ideal for high handicappers, although the course is very long. when I finished my round at 10 sunday morning, there wasn't more than 20 cars in the lot. play moves quite quickly, as I finished in 3 hours time. the bad reputation must still linger. highly recommend playing it, as the rates are reasonable and the conditions are above average. could use more trees, and especially fairway bunkers- only 18 has one. great for using mid & occassionally long irons.
could also use indicator on flag depth on green.

There is a ton of work being done to improve the course. The greens are fast, and much work is being done on the fairways. New tees have been added and more are planned. The new tees make gold tees (senior tees) more realistic and give seniors a fair advantage.

Just played the course in mid October. Great conditions. I hadn't played this course in a few years due to horrible conditions but it looks like some very nice changes have been made. Newly sodded tee boxes to shorten the white tees, additional cart paths, improve fairway & green conditions. I'm sorry that I haven't gotten back sooner. This has been one of my favorite courses and I learned how to play here. If the course would ever add some fairway bunkering and grow fescue in the "drainage ditches", this course would be a monster.

This is a great course in a beautiful setting at a great price.(Twenty bucks weekend). Huge green that are smooth and weed free.
There is no drinking water on the course, but the friendly snack bar staff will give you a large cup of ice water to take along with refill at the turn. Not many hazards to negotiate, but the lengh 6500 yds from the whites makes this course a challenge for anyone. Try this golf course, and you will come back.

Monroe Valley was very dry on my visit and as usual, in dry conditions, the balls sure did
roll...usually off the fairway and into the rough. Water does not come into play on most
holes except the Par 3 8th and the Par 4 13th. I found this to be a rather straight, bland
course with few exciting holes. The Par 3 15th offers a nice view of a little mountainous
knob beyond the green. On a very hot day...no water was offered.

Monroe Valley might be the best value in Central Pennsylvania. With the coupons they offer and the struggling economy, this course is a great value.

The Good:

The course is in a very nice setting in a small valley. Also, the course does have some decent length (over 7,000 yards from the back tees) for those that are longer hitters and tired of just hitting driver pitching wedge on all the par 4s. Unfortunately, the good probably stops there.

The Bad:

Course maintenance is very poor. The whole course is infested with dandelions including the fairways and teeboxes. Not to sound harsh, but that's just a sign of laziness on behalf of the grounds crew... seriously go buy some weed-n-feed at the hardware store or something!

The greens on the front 9 were horrible. They were recently aerated (and I'm taking that into consideration to be fair) but it was a real butcher job... hopefully they'll recover sometime soon. The greens on the back 9 were much better.

Most of the bunkers on the course don't even have rakes. Apparently there's a tool in the carts, but that dosen't help those of us that walk. Seriously... invest in some rakes.

For the shorter hitters, the yellow and red tee boxes are essentially non-existant. They just stick the tee markers out in the middle of the fairway.

I know my review is harsh, but it's well justified. I think this course is in a beautiful setting and has some potential, but the grounds crew needs to really sort some things out. They're being a bit ambitious with the prices they charge... better conditions can be found in the area for similar or lower prices.

Course is undergoing major rennovation, stick with it...
