Merion is a grand old lady, filled with history, and a course you should have on your wish list. I wouldn't rate it in my Top 30, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing there. Like so many of the older designs, the smallish greens and high rough protect have to hit it straight. Did not drive the ball well so I struggled with the high rough all day. Just have to take your penalty for missing the fairway. Love the wicker baskets, and reveling in the historic matches played there. Look forward to the upcoming US Open scheduled there to see how it stands up to the modern game.

I had the privilege of playing here on 5/9/09. This course has certainly earned its reputation of being incredibly difficult. So much so that despite its relatively short length (6000 yds.), and only 2 par 5's, it will be hosting the US Open in 2013. You can't go onto this course for the first time, and expect to score low (even if you're a low handicapper). Not only does the rough eat your ball up and NOT spit it out, I think you need to play a few rounds before you can really get a good feel for the course. If you only get to play it once (like me), just enjoy the round, and take some time to really appreciate the course. Holes like #12 where Bobby Jones completed the grand slam, and the spot on #18 where Ben Hogan stuck a 1-iron to force a playoff in the 1950 US Open and force a playoff are spots where you need to take a few seconds appreciate where you are. Don't take too long though as a 4 hour round is strictly enforced. Though probably not as asthetically pleasing as some other courses that are "inferior" to it, I believe this course deserves to be among the top 10 courses in the world due to its history, and exceptional course maintenance.

FROM THE WEB SITE: Championship golf and champion golfers have long been intertwined with the mystique of Merion Golf Club’s East and West Courses. Designed by Hugh Wilson, Merion’s East Course has played host to more USGA Championships than any course in America and is home to some of its greatest moments. From Robert Tyre Jones, Jr.'s completion of golf’s elusive Grand Slam at the 1930 U.S. Amateur held at Merion to Ben Hogan’s awe inspiring performance and now legendary one-iron on the 72nd hole during the 1950 U.S. Open, the sculpted greens, fairways, and treacherous bunkers of Merion have shaped the game. Merion continues to not only challenge the world’s best, but identify them as well.

COURSE CONDITION: The course is playing in championship caliber condition, every square inch of the course. The teeing areas were lush green, the fairways were cut short which made the ball get a little extra roll. The rough on the other hand was 4 to 5 inches high, which I seemed to be playing out of a lot. The undulating greens were cut tight and rolling fast and slippery. The course is ready to host the Walker Cup and the US Open now.

FACILITIES: Top notch practice facilities (driving range, putting and chipping greens), dinning, pro shop and staff.

SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS: This course is tight and preparing for the Walker Cup in the fall, so the rough is 4 to 5 inches high. The ball nestles down deep in the dense rough and if you don’t watch where it goes, you will never find it. Don’t EVER pass on an opportunity to play here! Check out the facilities and if you have time, have lunch or dinner on the outdoor patio over looking this gorgeous course.

GOLFNERDNESS: This place is awesome, I hope to get another chance to play the East Course and maybe the West Course!

GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT: Keep the ball out of the 4 to 5 inch rough and watch where it goes into the rough! I played Bethpage last fall, this course is much harder for the high handicapper.

I am currently a 12 handicap and had the privilage of playing Merion, East Course. The greens are very challenging, fairways are tight, but course for the most part is fairly open. Best course I have played (and I've played T. Pines in San Diego).
