This golf course and area bring back nothing but wonderful memories. The golf pro of over 60 years, R.A. "Hike" Tyrell and his wife, Valeda were good friends. Met them through my best friend, Mike Rosenquist, who was assistant under Hike in the mid 60's and went on to a wonderful golf career himself. Not noted in any of the bios of Ben Hogan is the fact that Hogan spent much of the summer of 1939 at Saranac Lake working on his game with Hike. There is printed and photo documentation at the Essex and Franklin County Historical soscieties. Hike was the heart and soul of Ray Brook golf course, which was originally called MEADOWBROOK when it was built in the early part of the 20th century. Born there in 1902 he was a great childhood friend of Craig Wood and several times he beat him like a drum when would wood come back to his hometown of Lake Placid, just 5 miles down the road from Raybrook to play exhibitions. Hike won the Lake Placid Open, which was a regular tour stop in the 20's and 30's and the only thing that kept him from a career on tour instead of a club pro was his loyalty to the area and several affluent members who coerced him to stay at Raybrook. Any golfer visiting the Adirondack area would do well to add this little 9 hole golf course to their play list, if for no reason other than the nostalgia and the history associated with it.

A great golf course with wonderful scenery! I spend many many days as a little girl with my grandparents Hike and Valeda Tyrell at this course, it brings back great memories. The cost is not outragest and the greens are nice too!
