Be prepared to encounter more sand traps then you have ever seen on a golf course. It may overwhelm the person, who plays the course for the first time, but the more you play the course; the more you appreciate the strategy inherent in the design. My favorite combination is this course with the West nine, but I like to mix it up practically every time I’m at Sand Barrens. They all are top notch.

pleasant scenery and impressive clubhouse. plenty of practice area set aside for putting green and driving ranges-2. I played west and north courses. west considered most visually impressive, and north considered the hardest. not much water to worry about on tee shots. tons of sand sculptured throughout the course, in mounded and crater like features, that saves mowing costs, but appears crafted and not gratuitously substituted for rough areas. greens were very quick, and huge. some areas were light brown, because of the immensity of care required, but overall in excellent shape. fairways were also in excellent shape. off the fairway was a slight sliver on each side of rough, then sand, and a thin line of trees. after the round, only a few memorable holes come to mind, as most appear to be the same: slightly undulating terrain, winding through trees, sand, and more sand, with undulating fairways and greens. hole no 4w is a short par 4, dogleg right. If you dare to use a driver, aim for the green, and hope you hit it straight, otherwise be prepared to hit your second shot from a deeply carved sand bunker to a narrow but long green, shared within another hole. no. 5w was a par 5 that penalizes a shot that strays to the right with a pond and stream, then either a layup is required for cautionary players, or an accurate shot is necessary to land in the heavily bunker surrounded green. no. 7 is a short par 4 dogleg left, completely surrounded by sand. the north course has by far the most sand, with nos. 1,2,4,and 8 lined with sand on one side of the fairway to green.
the staff was very courteous, and amenable. it is overpriced compared to quality courses in southeastern Pa, but comparable to other shore refined courses, such as shoregate, harbor pines, twisted dunes, and cape may national. better value than avalon golf club. at the shore, location is a premium, and value is sacrificed. until more courses are built within striking distance(25 miles) of the shore, expect to pay double for a comparable course back home.
You shouldn't lose too many balls here, unless you have a wicked hook or slice. carts have a gps system. it was a little difficult to follow the hole layout, as the 3 courses intersect, and intertwine. I enjoyed my round, shooting 5 over par from the white tees, and would return.

You need to double check your yardages before trusting the GPS in the cart, you need to be on your game to score well, manage the course and don't let the course manage you.

The overall conditions were very bad Labor Day Weekend. Greens bumpy - the first green was like putting on tarmac. The yardages were skeptical and did not match what GPS was telling us. A bad expereince. Not worth the money.

Just played it last Tues. South and West courses. Couple of things I've noticed. One, the greens were in pretty bad conditions...pretty fast wit divot/dirt filled holes everywhere. Second, the bunkers had more rocks/pebbles in it then sand. And lastly, the yardages were different from what they appeared like and the GPS system was saying different yardages then the markers?!?! I was very disappointed...=[

Sand Barrens North and West Course

We travel to Atlantic City every spring and have been wanting to play this course for a while, but never wanted to invest in the 40 minute drive south from AC. This year (May 21, 2006) we decided to make the trip. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed.

The conditions of the greens on this course were horrible - they were recently aerated (3 weeks prior), but they had many problems other than that. They were bumpy, lacking grass in some areas and had divot-like holes everywhere. I almost never had a putt that didn't involve going over a fairly big imperfection. 15 out of 18 greens were affected.

The course layout itself is very nice, although my group believed that the yardages were a lot shorter than were advertised (I doubt that I actually got 40 more yards out of my drives on a number of holes!). Also, the GPS in our cart conflicted with that of the other cart and it was very difficult to figure out what the yardages actually were.

The staff at this course is exceedingly friendly and helpful. However, there was no beverage cart on a Sunday, an amenity that should have been present for the rates they were charging.

We had the opportunity to play 2 other courses in the area on subsequent days and both of their greens were in pristine condition. All the golfers in my group felt that this course had no business charging $90 for the conditions that we encountered. I only wish that I had read an article like this one before we decided to play this course.

Sorry! I don't like to be unpleasant, but this is the truth.
