Not a bad course: Greens were in very good shape.

Just a mile and a half from Bethlehem Country Club, Maplewood starts you off with the two most difficult holes on the front 9. I played it when it was 40 degrees, and with a lot of leaves falling, it was a challenge on the front 9. The course is on both sides of the road and holes 2-11 are across from the Inn. The new tee decks are great and there is a par 6 after you finish with a par 5 on the back nine. Water comes into play on several holes on the clubhouse side of the course. An enjoyable old course and it is very doable to golf a round here, eat and then golf at Bethlehem CC.

Living in CO where we have fewer trees, I was excited to play a course surrounded by large, majestic trees....or so I thought. The 2nd hole is a straight shot from tee-box to green, a little uphill, but the fairway probably isn't wider than 40 yards all the way down and the trees on both sides, spaced about 10 feet apart, seem to laugh as you tee-off. It wasn't uncommon to hear the crack of the driver followed by the thick "thunk" of a ball hitting a tree.

All in all the course is fun and the greens are amazing. I have never seen a course with greens that roll and pitch as much as these. A new investor recently bought the property and they are installing two new sets of tees further back on several of the holes. Because of where they are situated, driving becomes similiar to a bullet leaving the barrel of gun. Better be straight when it leaves the tee.

The fairways were a little rough, but the course is open maybe five months a year, but what I really found attractive about the course was the history. Nearly 80 years old the pro shop had pictures of golfers from Bobby Jones to Tiger playing the course, and the Maplewood Inn, which is attached to the property, used to be a vacation destination for Presidents and blue bloods. It is a little run-down now, but the history s intoxicating the character of the place undeniable.

If you are into the newer, more modern "target golf" courses, then I wouldn't recommend this too highly, but if you, like me, get into the history of golf, it is definately a great place to visit with an amazingly scenic drive from Manchester.
