The Wilshire Golf Club in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is your basic 18-hole public golf course with a few surprise holes that keep your round interesting.

The course offers three tees, with the par-71 back tees playing 6,035 yards. The design of the course is pretty mundane with many up-and-back holes placed side-by-side. There really isn’t much wiggle room anywhere on the course and the holes feel like they are crowded together to fit in a certain space. Expect a few errant shots from other holes to come your way so always be aware of your surroundings.

Most of the holes are fairly standard and not much of a challenge for a good golfer. The par-5 eleventh hole is a stark contrast to the other holes on the course, a 488-yard dogleg left that is so sharp that you won't even see the green until after your second shot. Placement of your drive on the right side of the fairway is important but stay on the fairway to avoid a few trees in the right rough.

Here's where things get tricky. A large cluster of trees on the left are too tall for you to carry your second shot to the green. Creating even more doubt is the water hazard located directly in front of the green. It's a fun challenge for low handicap golfers, but average golfers will probably want to lay up short in front of the water on their third shot and hope to pitch and putt for par.

A stretch of three short par-4s on the back nine give you an opportunity to regain the strokes lost back on No. 11. Holes 14, 15 and 16 are all straight holes measuring right around 300 yards. With a great drive on any of those holes, you could be putting for eagle.

Overall, the course is in good shape although the greens are sometimes a little hard. Since the course is flat, it is easy to walk and the scenery with mature trees and water features is nice.

The course is marked well and the tee markers even include distance to the nearest water hazard.

The Wilshire Golf Club is best-suited for average golfers looking for a good value and few surprises on the course. The staff is friendly and happy to help you set up a tee time or offer tips about the course.

This course has green fairways year round and is quite challenging. The greens are in great condition and hole placement keeps you on your toes, as well as creeks a plenty to test your skill. Staff there are really friendly and work hard to make sure you enjoy your game. Excellent grill!! If you have not played there in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised by the improvements made over the past couple of years. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.

I get down to Winston Salem once a year in the early Spring and always take time to play 18 at Wilshire. I has consistently been a good value and a fun round. Well maintained and a friendly staff. The clubhouse has an excellent snack bar. Overall the course is a fair test of skill except for Hole 11. It is IMPOSSIBLE! Bring several range balls for this hole because you will lose at least 2 or 3 on this hole. The course provides a good amount of variety and overall you will enjoy your round here.

I recently have played a few rounds here. The grill is GREAT, especially for breakfast, we play here before work and its nice to start the day on a full stomach, I know its about the golf, but a lot of courses miss the boat here. The front nine definitely plays much easier than the back. Neither are very hard, there are a few holes that are quite comical. Course is fairly well maintained, had to play behind the guy rolling the greens one morning, kinda rude, but at least they were keeping em up. Clubhouse needs a little tlc, but they have a fair ball selection, few clubs, ect, but who really buys clubs at a course anymore. I'll go back, its a good value and convenient, if nothing else for breakfast.ha
