Wilmington Municipal Golf Course, Wilmington, NC

I finally got a chance to play the course and was not disappointed. Here is the chance to play a real Donald Ross course that hasn't been destroyed by a green's chairman over many years. Pinehurst and other Ross originals cost over $100 or in come cases, hundreds of dollars. The greens at Wilmington Municipal are true to the original design. Pins in the corners of what appear to be benign greens are extremely difficult. Fairway bunkers 10 to 20 yards short of greens give the appearance that the hole is shorter than the actual yardage. Both very, very Ross features. It is a muni, so it is played hard but the greens were true and fast enough. Don't expect fine dining, a great bar or other amenities. If you came for golf, you will love it. When in Wilmington, NC, find a way to play this great, true to the original design course. I should also thank John Fought for a great restoration.

The course was totally redone in 2014. The greens are the new Bermuda that's working so well in the south. They are fast and true.Lots of sand traps were added and it's a true test of golf. I live in virginia but I was there in June and the course was in excellent condition. Dollar for dollar you can't beat the Muni.
