Course is now leased to Avestra Management. Bunkers are not raked daily, cart pths are in shambles. In my opinion the golf pro was very arrogant. Employees complain about not being paid on time. I woul definiltely not pay anything upfront. Pro shop has very little stock.

Absolutely wonderful layout, with severe penalties for hitting the ball into the wrong spot, on the green or not. Great value where you can experience a classic golf course, in relatively good condition, for a very reasonable price. The pro shop was bare and the practice area rough, but the course itself was well worth the price. If only the staff had turned off the sprinklers, at least while we were playing the hole - I personally had to time runs to retrieve balls at least six times - and every other member of our group (of 24 players) that played the course at 10 AM on a Saturday reported a similar experience. The "Pro" saw me dodging the sprinklers at least two of those times and made no effort to correct the situation or even to apologize.

This is a great course at a great value. If you are a member of the Elk's Lodge, you can play for about $40 with a cart. They don't typically check your Elk's card, so if you just play along and give the impression you are an Elk, you can get on for the low price.

There is simply no better value in Pinehurst as far as Donald Ross courses go. Every other Donald Ross course (especially Pinehurst No. 2) is astoundingly more expensive in the Pinehurst area. The great value, however, does not detract from the course.

I have played Pinehurst No. 2, and I can attest that Southern Pines has the same classic feel of Ross' other courses. Of course, it isn't as well maintained as No. 2 (maybe 0.00001% of the courses in the world are :-) ), but Southern Pine is usually in good shape (especially in the last two years or so) and it is a lot of fun to play. It is truly a pleasure to play, and you will find yourself appreciating the subtle beauty of each hole while you play.

This course is in transition of managemetn and will only get better. This is a classic Donald Ross design and a great layout. The course for the past few years had not been well maintained. The clubhouse is being remodeled and currently has virtually no amenities--but this will soon change. Now that the club is under new management for just a few weeks, the improvements are already noticable. This course will soon become much more popular and probably much more expensive. I played it for $42 with a cart. Play it now while it is still a heck of a deal! 8/07

Classic design leads to a great day on the course.

This is another classic Donald Ross. Shot values are subtle and the correct side of the hole will make or break your round. The Par 3's are so much fun; the Par 4's are classics and the Par 5's give you a chance to repair an ailing scorecard. Golf is just fun when you get a course like this one. The friendly staff and overall service makes it that much more enjoyable.
