The course is alright. The staff is miserable, they act as though they would rather be somewhere else, not helpful.

Sound of Freedom Golf Course MCAS Cherry Point, NC

The course at MCAS Cherry Point, NC has been undergone renovation in the recent past that has improved play on the course immensely.

All of the greens were completely rebuilt and now drain properly so that even after a torrential downpour they will play much better than they did in the past.

The fairways have been much better defined as well. The bunkers have all been reworked as well. Now they play as a sand trap, not like a rock garden.

Hole number nine has two interesting additions, neither of which show up on the diagram provided by this site. There is a fairway bunker located over the water hazard (also not shown on the diagram) where you would naturally want to play. It forces you to try to put you tee shot out to the left of it if you going to play it safe. If you are going for it all, you risk the water, the woods, and the second addition to this hole. There is an alligator that has taken up residence in the water hazard. His name is Spike, and he may have a smaller gator there for company. He is about ten to twelve feet long and he is real, so don’t mess with him. I have observed him on one occasion.

There is a driving range on site with balls dispensed from a machine at a very reasonable price. You have the option to hit from a mat or to hit from natural grass. There is an area off to the side to practice bunker shots.

There are toilet facilities available at various points out on the course. Ice Water containers are strategically located as well. And for those who do not like getting wet by those sudden showers that are common around these parts there are shelters placed about the course as well.

The club house has reasonably priced accessories available for purchase. A snack bar is located upstairs from the club house. There are also beverage machines situated at several locations with wide selection beverages.

Prices overall are moderate, with retired or active military personnel charges based on their rank; Their guests will be charged a set guest rate.

Sound Of Freedom Golf Course MCAS Cherry Point

Had the opportunity to play this course with my son, on active duty at MCAS Cherry point. Having played many many courses in NC, I would rate this course one of, if not the BEST Value in the state. I found the course challenging, (I shoot in the low 100's) but fair. Unlike many courses, here you are not penalized for hitting a good shot, only a bad one. In keeping with the "coastal theme" there is an abundance of sand, but the bunkers are extremely consistant and well maintained. Greens were in very nice condition, especially given the time of year. There was a tournment that day prior to us playing and the water supply on the course has not been replenished on the front nine, a minor point, however next time we will take water with us. The only criticism was that play was a little slow at times, perhaps using a ranger would help the situation. Did not see any gators, and got a chuckle from "Lake Fontana" the big puddle on the back nine. Overall I can't wait to play it again!
