My cousin Bob and I played Tot Hill on the morning of 02/23/11. It was a cold start at 42 degrees, but it warmed up nicely when the sun broke through (around the 7th hole). We only paid $29 each through to play it, so we were able to look past a couple of small disappointments. I should start out by saying that the staff were wonderfully accomodating and friendly. We had a nice chat with the pro prior to being let out and he brewed us a fresh pot of coffee while we waited. There is a nice snack bar and "pro-shop" with some cool and affordable souveniers too. We were a bit surprised to see that the fairways were not overseeded like it's sister course (Tobacco Road) which we had played 2 days prior. With Tobacco Road and Tot Hill on the same latitude and just an hour drive apart, it was slightly disappointing. The course is still beautiful and unique, with ALOT of elevation change. We were somewhat surprised however at the cramping of a couple holes. The #3 green and #4 tee boxes are INSANELY close to one another, and seem jammed in. Same for the #5 green and #6 tees. We began to speculate that maybe the back tees had been extended in recent years to keep Tot Hill among "the top 20 most difficult courses in the USA". Other than that, the course flows competently. We also found that you aren't likely to lose too many balls if you just trust your yardage guide and play it safe. We lost 2 each and were playing mediocre, at best. We both agreed that the biggest monster here is the greens. We each 3 putted 6 times during our round. They were in good shape for the time of year, but very fast and severely sloped. All in all, Tot Hill is a good play and worth the drive.

Wonderful golf course. First time I played there and played from the Tips. Every thing was in good condition and the lay out is like nothing I have ever seen before. Difficult shot every time you got over the golf ball but still do-able as long as you committed to the shot and struck the ball well. Will must certainly be back!

I have just spent 6 weeks in North Carolina and Virginia and Tot Hill was one of my favorite course, along with Olde Mill and Caledonia. It is difficult, but if you aim right, then it's ok : I usually played to my handicap (34) from the green tees (I did lose a lot of golf balls though !). The people at the club house are moreover very friendly and it's not as crowded as Tobacco Road (another nice course !).

Truly one of the most unique and challenging golf experiences of my life. The first 15 holes or so are in the woods, cascading up and down the hills, providing beautiful scenery and great shot values. The greens are amazing, and some have to be seen to be believed..You can hit good shots that make you look silly..thus a replay will help..The rough, while not horribly long, is like being in a hazard. For those going to Pinehurst from the North, well worth the stop aling the way. I prefer it to anything I have played in Pinehurst

This course sets the bar in the area. Nationally recognized, beautiful scenery, and plays as the ultimate risk/reward course.

Reading about this course leaves the impression that the course layout is too difficult for the average golfer. I beg to differ. While it is a hard layout, it is a very fair course, and the challenge jsut adds to your enjoyment of Tot Hill Farms. As far a scenery is concerned, it approaches Pebble Beach in my opinion. Can't wait to go again!

Beautiful Course, Great Shape Played it a few time and look foward to going back every time. Some say it's unfair(all the rocks) but I say it's a challenging, exciting course.

This course is a fantastic value. When I played in October of 2007, it was $39 with a cart, and they let my girlfriend ride along for no extra fee.

The staff is all friendly and informative, and the amenities are "good enough" (typical pro shop/snack bar, nothing special).

Within 50 yards of the pin, this could be the most difficult course in the United States. The greens are wicked, and if you don't hit your approach shot on the green, it is almost impossible to chip it within 5 feet. The undulations/ridges on some of the greens are borderline ridiculous. The greens are truly what make this course one of the toughest around.

Off the tee, the course isn't that bad--it isn't too difficult to pick the right club if you don't play the tips, because the par 3s are relatively straight forward, and the par 4 approach shots have a lot of elevation variations, but the yardage markers are accurate and make it much easier to pick a club.

Every par 3 is picturesque but tough, and the par 5s are beasts -- even Tiger would have a problem making it in 2 on most of them.

Overall, this is a great value, a fun course to play, and worth the drive if you are on your way down to Pinehurst (it is right off 220 south.
