9 hole regulation length course
The 9-hole "Shelby" course at the Shelby Country Club facility in Shelby, Mississippi features all the hallmarks of Mississippi golf. Shelby golf course opened in 1937.
I grew up in Shelby in fact down the Street from the Golf course. But since I was Africa American. The reason we was told we could not go is becuase it was for members only. The White posted that to keep blacks out. I lived there for 18 years and have never seen the inside of that golf course or pool. So I really can not give it any type of review.
The Ghost of Golf PastThe once booming wealthy delta town of Shelby MS now stands as a dilapidated shell of its former self. Driving through the old town you can see the shadows of its once fine charm and stature. Large old Victorian homes that in there prime were awe inspiring now sit rotting from neglect and weather erosion. Down Highway 32, past an old grandiose cemetery, resides a hidden and silent treasure of Shelby’s former self. Up the gravel road, past the rusted members only sign, next to the boarded up club house is a great 9 hole course. There are no carts, amenities, green fees or waiting. Some nostalgic person still maintains the course. When you first pull up all you see is the closed down swimming pool and boarded up club house but then, emerging like a ray of sunshine across the delta flatland, are waving flags marking the holes. If you find yourself traveling on Hwy 61 between Clarksdale and Cleveland take the time to stop in Shelby and play 18 holes of dieing history.
