Three diverse and well maintained nines comprise the courses at Old Channel Trail. The Woods nine is an old style course featuring large trees and sloped greens, berms and moguls rather than traps and water. The Meadows and Valley offer elevation changes and tricky greens in a beautiful location. When I visit West Michigan it is one of my must play courses.

A few more trees on this 9 make it a little more challenging tee to green. Greens in nice shape - small, with mild slopes. Very few sand traps, but occasional "grass" fairway traps. Good value.

A wonderful old nine

Designed in the 1920s, the woods nine is a great old public nine at a great price.

Difficulty wise, nobody's going to confuse the Woods with championship golf. Its a par 35 layout with most of the par fours running about 375 yards and a 500+ par five closing hole. However, the course has a ton of charm, not the least of which is its location, winding through hardwoods along the shores of Lake Michigan. This makes for wonderful breezes and although the Lake is rarely viewable from the course, its presence is always felt.

The most distinctive highlight of the nine are the large grass bunkers which line the fairways of several holes adding trouble and a bit of a Scottish feel. Several of the holes have grass pot bunkers guarding the greens.

Although not long, several holes are extremely well-designed. Of special note are the short par four 6th, a right hand dogleg that looks easy from the tee but requires a very well-placed drive to open up the sloped, narrow green, and the 135 yard par 3 eighth which plays uphill and upwind to a sloped green. Your club selection will vary with the wind on the hole which seems to play different every time out. On the other seven holes, the greens are fairly flat and tend to be slow and straight.

Amenities are complete but basic. A small clubhouse with a limited food/beverage menu. There's a self-serve driving range with a three hole practice facility. In short, its everything you would need, but nothing to compare with newer full service course with huge clubhouses and adjoined restaurants. Still, its all user friendly and clean.

Overall, its a charming little nine on a course that is easy enough for a beginner but has enough quirks and challenges that avid golfers will love it too. I have a foursome that plays all over West Michigan including a number of more illustrious course. We always make it a point to play Old Channel several times per season. Its a lot of fun and is well-run, well-maintained and never seems to get a ton of play. One of the best values in West Michigan, especially if you can play during the twilight rates.
