I played Marlton yesterday for the first time in over a year. I paid $21.00 with a cart which was a real steal. But however after playing a few holes I felt ripped off ... they should have gave me $25.00 for playing the course. I have never seen this course in this shape EVER. I have played over 300 - 400 rounds of golf here when I lived in Clinton. But all I can say is WOW and HOW .... Wow they let this course go and HOW did they let it get like this. ZERO sand in the sand bunkers. Green very fluffy and havent been cut in weeks. Fairway either roped off from damage or just bare with dirt every where. I have played a lot of places in Maryland and never thought I would ever say this about Marlton but this course needs to just give it up. Almost brought me to tears because I know what the conditions were like before. SAD SAD SAD.

I've played this course a total of 5 times over the course of this Summer that is just about over, one was a memorial tournament in late June and the others were all while taking advantage of a weekend twilight special they ran all Summer, $25 after 3pm that includes your riding cart and a small bucket of balls, it's hard to beat that. With the start of Sept. they have pushed the start of their twilight back to 2pm. Hats off to them for that. Over the 10 years that I've played this course (with a break of several years in the middle), I've seen it in better shape, and a couple of tee-boxes are still mostly, if not all, dirt. The greens have been in decent shape, but slower than I prefer. On that twilight rate it's tough to beat the value.

Let me start by saying this was the first time playing this course.

Amenities - I was greeted by a club house staff that was extremely friendly and courteous. The Pro shop was well stocked though I thought some of their prices a bit high. However, it was clean and tidey and again, the staff very friendly. The snack bar was nice, clean and had a good offering with daily specials. A very large driving range was available and I noticed had a couple of water coolers where most courses don't offer water at the range. There were two putting greens and one was for putting only.

Difficulty - I just started back playing after almost 20 years so am trying to get my game back as can be seen by my handicap. I shot an even 100; however, partly due to never playing the course before and not reading the hole descriptions on the score card. The course was not extremely difficult and could be a course played for almost any level of capability. This course has some holes that will make you think (risk/reward) holes. There are a couple of par 4's that will really tempt the long hitters to go for eagle as they are very reachable off the tee.

Maintenance - This is where it got bad. Tee boxes were in poor shape as were most of the fairways. Crabgrass everywhere, in tee boxes, fairways (many times it seemed the only grass), and the green fringes and even a couple of the greens. Many of the fairway have areas that should be marked as ground under repair as they were as soggy as a marsh. Greens had some burn damage; however, they were fast and like putting on glass (with the exception of the ones that had crabgrass). In defense of the course, you can see they are trying to make improvements and it was a very hot dry summer in this part of Maryland. Tee boxes were in poor condition with many having no grass at all. Both par 3's on the back nine was just teeing off of dirt.

Scenery - For a course the meanders through a housing development, the scenery was quite nice. Even many of the houses are quite beautiful and almost appears that the owners try to keep their yards nice to blend in with the course.

Value - With the TeeTime golf pass this course was only $28.00 w/cart. Unfortunately, many people would say that based on the condition it wasn't worth it. I on the other hand think it was a decent value and the course needs the money to enable them to make improvements. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate the value as a 6.

Overall - Course will improve in time. Hopefully with fall/winter coming, the staff will be able to get this course back into good shape. It has the potential to be a very nice course that will make you think. Overall, I would say this course is a bit below average at this time. However; based on the value, vicinity to my home and my current playing ability. I will play this course again in the near future.
