Course Reviews

Brutally tough course, of course I've only played it once, and I want another crack at it. In pretty good shape, small driving range, not the best place to eat but the clubhouse does look over the 18th hole beautifully. Be prepared to lose a couple of balls here.

BUCKING THE TREND-- SO FAR.

AS OF MARCH 12, 2007, COURSE MAY BE BEST VALUE ON CAPE IF 50 DOLLAR POSTING HOLDS. A PRETTY COURSE AND VERY CHALLENGING--YOU SIMPLY CAN'T BE OFF LINE. EVERYONE SEEMS TO LIKE NO.2. FOR SOME REASON, I ALSO LIKE NO. 11. NO.9 IS A TRUE STINKER, A HOLE THAT IS AN INJUSTICE TO AN OTHERWISE GOOD COURSE,

A rare beauty

I admit it, I have a history with this course, having grown up on Cape Cod and lived there for over 40 years. Indeed, I witnessed this course being built in the late seventies/early eighties and talked with the owner/developer as he hit practice shots in the dirt fairways trying to determine best tee placements and such.

Well, I"m very happy to report that upon returning to this course for the first time in 18 years, it has matured into a real beauty. The potential was always there, as the course is carved out of pristine cape woodlands and marshes. The front nine has no development at all among the holes and you are in a private natural sanctuary. And what homes are in view on the back nine are all very tastefully done and do not crowd the course, maintaining the natural ambience very nicely.

The course is not easy. The fact that it meanders through dense woodlands, marshes and cape cod 'quagmire' accentuate both it's beauty and difficulty, for if you hit a stray shot off the fairway, its usually 'goodbye' to that ball and your score for that hole. Notwithstanding, if you enjoy golf for golf's sake, the experience of being in nature, and can take your fair share of humility in stride, then this is a course you do not want to miss.

Quashnet Valley's course layout really does a fine job of utilizing the lay of the land well. It rolls over hills and provides tee shots over water, out of tunnels carved out of dense woods, into valleys, and over and through marshlands, all of which turn glorious colors in the fall. Here and there, wooden bridges carry the golfer from green to the next tee through magical areas of natural wilderness. It's quite an adventure for the senses.

Strongest holes are difficult to name, as there are so many and they all are quite unique. But my favorites include the short, picturesque 2nd hole, an 8-iron or so over the marsh to a small green perfectly framed by dense woodlands; the par 5 seventh hole - with two bodies of water to traverse; the ninth hole (you have to play this one to believe it -- dogleg par 4 left, out of the wilderness, over the marsh to a strip of fairway, then over water to the green); the twelvth hole, a tee shot from way up on a hill top, over a deep valley for an uphill approach to the green; and the challenging fifteenth hole, a gloriously pretty par 4 that defines the term 'tight'. I could go on and include every hole on the course, As there's not really a weak hole in the bunch.

The course has a large clubhouse with a wrap around deck from which you can watch players play up to the ninth green (a nice touch). However, to my eye, the architecture style of the structure doesn't really meld well with the exquisite surroundings, as it's very 'eighties' (modern), but that's just my opinion, and certainly doesn't affect the superb golf. At $50 on a weekday, I thought the greens fees here a bit pricey, but soon discovered that ALL Cape Cod golf courses have raised their fees substantially since I lived here last (in 1995). So, I guess thats the status quo for that region.

All and all, Quashnet Valley is a very memorable course through exquisite Cape natural preserves. I highly recommended it.
