Good, playable course. You can hit the driver, which I like. There are a couple of throw away holes, particularly the short dog leg par 4 around the small pond (#12?). All in all, I think it is a better buy than some other "high-end" public courses in the area.

Too many blind tee shots.

Highfields has all of the potential to be one of the premier courses in Central MA. Unfortunately, in their current state, they will not acheive such a distinction. The course is well maintained, and is challenging layout however one could argue that there are too many doglegs and blind tee shots. They have finished construction on a beautiful new clubhouse, with restaurant, bar, function rooms, and an extensive pro shop. Unfortunately, the expansive windows in the function room look out over the parking lot and driving range, rather than utilizing the hilltop location to frame the Massachusetts landscape. The driving range leaves much to be desired. It is sited so you are hitting down a hill, and distances are not clearly indicated. Furthermore, they close the range at 5, so hitting a bucket after work is impossible.

My poor overall rating stems primarily the attitude of the club. Although a Public club, they are doing very little to appeal to the public. Both the front and back nines are blocked off for leagues every night of the week until around 530, making it difficult and slow to play after work. Furthermore, the course is situated on a hill, not overly walker friendly, Yet they will not allow carts out after 6. "They are the owner's carts, and those are his rules". On multiple occasions, the general attitude of the employees made me feel unwelcome, and I have decided that despite the convenience of having a nice club around the corner, I would much prefer to drive a little ways (even with these gas prices)to friendlier, more welcoming club.

Nice experience. Very good conditions and maintenance (except some tees were being aerated). Some really good looking holes and scenery. The hole diagram books on the carts were a nice touch. Will definitely return in a couple weeks when the leaf colors are more vivid.

Give it time, after the clubhouse is complete this has the possibility to become a top-of-the-line course

I'll come back ... in a year or so.

For a course that has been open for 5+ years ... they look like they just opened! They are still building the clubhouse, and that's fine and acceptable, but ... no excuse for no signs leading in (almost everyone thinks their lost when they are within 1/4 mile!), bunkers not raked and having rocks in them, no driving range (wasn't opened when i went anyway), and the slowest staff behind the food counter (like they didn't even know you need to get back out there when getting a drink at the turn!).

I am a little bummed at the overall experience, but think that with a little work - this course will be VERY good. And I have faith in Roger Adams (the head Pro) ... I met him several times when he worked at Saddle Hill in Hopkinton ... and a super guy. Best of luck Roger - I will come back and check on the progress in a few months!

Hidden Gem

This course is about three yrs old and the conditions were A+. They need a clubhouse(double trailer) but all the amenities were there. If you like perfect conditions(greens, fairways, rough, bunkers) you won't find it any better.
