This municipal course has the potential of being an exceptional course; however, the lack of proper maintenance has left it as one of the two worst courses I have ever played in my almost 40 years of golfing! The 4 holes in a valley area (2, 3, 14, 15) have fairways that are overwhelmingly hilly. On 15, I hit my drive into the center of the fairway and found it buried in a patch of 2-inch clover. The edges of many of the greens have bare spots from the grass dying. The sand traps (the few that are on the course) have little sand and many rocks. I played this course in the 1980's a few times and remember it being one of the best courses for miles around -- long (over 6800 from the back tees), hilly, and a solid test of a good golfer. Then, my only complaint to Mr, Diddel (one of the course designers) would have been that hole 7 has no good landing area off the tee. Today, I don't believe I will ever go back.

I have to agree with 6Express here. I have played this course a few different times. I agree the layout is fantastic, but it would take lots of money and lots of work added to its current state to make it current. There are better values out there.

I have played this course several times. Fairways #3, #14 and #15 are in need of very expensive repairs. I have hit out of rough that is literally 12" long because my ball landed in a mogul. Other than that, the other holes are very challenging and fun to play. I believe it is a good value and worth the cost.

The previous review was quite selective. Is "moguls" what you would call on the fairways of holes 2, 3, 14, and 15????? These holes are in horrible shape, the fairways are soooo bumpy that they can not be cut, grass is either too long or missing because of the "moguls" and lots of them. All the fairways listed need to be raised and regradded. Many of the greens had dead spots or fungus. More than half of the orginal bunkers have been grassed over. Could this course be a hidden gem, yes. Is it in its present condition, not at all.

Please note that I am neither a beginner in golf nor am faint of heart. Although after seeing the horrible conditions in the fairways mentioned or on some of the greens some may faint. That being said, I TOO have played all over the country and can think of MANY courses I have paid the same to play and found much much better conditions.

Reviewed November 27, 2007

The moguls previously mentioned are because the drainage tiles have sunk over the 45 years the course has been open. The greens have very severe slopes and are fairly quick. This course isn't for the faint of heart or for the beginner. In most cases it is better to be short of the green than above the hole.

I have played golf all over the country and have paid a lot more for a lot less.

Sims Oak Hills - A Hidden Gem with Teeth!

First of all, when most people talk about the course they refer to the moguls on the lower side of the facility. When you look past to see the overall layout, you find a scenic challenging facility that can tame even the best of players. To date the course record is 64. In the last 10 years, the lowerst verified score is 67.

The slopes on the greens and the tree lined fairways make it easy to see this course as a challenge to your abilities, whatever level of golfer you are.

There is not alot in the realm of amenities. Just the basics, hotdog, chips, pop and beer. There is an open air pavillion that seems to get alot of use, other than that, there's not a sit down dining room. There is a nice deck with umbrellas and a great view of 1 tee and 18 green.

It is a real gem and a great value. Check it out!!!
