I call Maple Creek a once in a lifetime opportunity, and not in a good way. I am a high handicap player and for me the trees, water, sand and OB jammed together on this small layout made for a frustrating, unpleasant morning. Courses like this one may thrill the avid player, but I believe they contribute to the decline of golf as a recreational sport. It's just not fun.

Nice course... Never even knew it was public until this year. Very well maintained and friendly place. It seems like an easy course to score on until you hit your driver.
I advise taking a hybrid off of most tees and stay in the short grass. The greens are some of the best rolling I have ever played. Very fun and easy to walk if thats your game. I would definitley go back to pitch outta the trees again!

I grew up just down the street from this course... caddied there once as a kid (When it was Heather Hills) (I didn't realize how much a caddy worked his but off for so little pay).. and have lived near it for most of my life and was thrilled when it finally became open to the public. This is by far the best kept course for the money, you won't find any better in central Indiana for under $70 a round.
Alright, the course... Denrod was right... it takes a few rounds before you realize that there aren't very many holes that you should be playing your driver off the tee, a lot of them look like you can, but once you get caught on the wrong side of the trees or hit into one of the fairway bunkers you'd wish you'd laid up.
The 12 green has a helluva slope from back to front, and you'll figure out that you need to play it from the front of the green. If you haven't played here and are planning to, take my advice, it's better to be short and have to take a chip shot uphill onto that green than try to put from above the hole.

Holes 9 and 18 are within slice/hook of the driving range, lots of yellow range balls on the 18th fairway (the slice side for righties) I've never seen a range ball near either tee box but they scatter the fairways. The driving range sure looks like an afterthought.

The staff is great, helping you with your clubs from the parking lot, driving a cart out to you if they see you coming, offering damp towels, after you finish they'll help you clean off your clubs and even take them to your car... something I'm not used to at all from playing public courses mostly on the east side of the city.

Even though it can be a frustrating course to play I'm sure glad it went public and I really like playing there.

Pete Dye's first...It shows

I wish to explain right up front, that just because I rate this a 4 out of 5 does not mean I particularly like it. I was a member here before it went public, and I feel it contributed to the near demise of what little game I had. One lesson I never learned due to my ego was to leave the driver at home when playing here. Most of the fairways here require the skill of a brain surgeon to stay out of trouble. It appears to me that Pete Dye designed an 18-hole layout on a parcel of land more suited for 9. Watch out teeing off on might get hit by a ball from the practice range which borders 18 on the right. And a few holes are pretty tricked up. Once I found out which way to shoot from the 13th tee (I think), I found a lot of optical illusions there cause by the bunkering on the right side. The 12th green is a joke. It slopes from back to front. They used to run a Soap Box Derby on it before it was a golf course, I think. Now that I have dissed this course.....The staff has always been friendly and efficiant. I once broke a shaft here in a fit of rage. I asked if they could get it fixed, and I had it back within the week, at a very reasonable price. The condition of this tight course is borderline superb! The fairways have always been good, and the greens are as good as anything I have played in Central Indiana. Considering the financial problems this club has been going through, I feel this is a tribute to their staff. And there are a couple of holes that I truly love; the 11th and the 16th. Last summer, MCCC opened the doors to public play at $25 w/cart during the week. If these prices hold this year, I intend on spending quite a bit of time and suffering quite a bit of aggrivation here, trying again and again to solve it.
