The 18-hole "Makai 18" course at the Princeville Makai Golf Club facility in Princeville, Hawaii features 7,204 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., ASGCA, the Makai 18 golf course opened in 2010.
Played this course on my honeymoon yesterday. After speaking with someone in the pro shop via phone a few days earlier, I was apprehensive, as he exhibited the stand-offish attitude typical of many pro shop employees. However, upon arriving at the course, we were taken care of by Chris, the starter. Chris was an awesome guy and arranged a time for my wife and I where we could play and not feel at all rushed (my wife is new to the game). Chris was really exceptional. The course is in beautiful shape and the greens rolled really nicely -- better than the Poipu Bay down on the south side of the island -- and those greens weren't bad. Overall the course was cosmetically really nice, really well maintained, and complete with numerous stunning ocean views. Still, it lacked something in the "character" department, and felt a little like another souless, ultra-manicured resport course. While I was itching to play Poipu Bay again earlier in the week, I had no real desire to replay this course, despite its views, cliff carries, and so on. Some of its most dramatic holes, were so so much like Palm Springs or other high end public courses I'd played elsewhere in the US, I wasn't ultimately knocked out. Kudos to Chris, and the rest of the guys at the starter desk. Awesome guys.
