Course Reviews

Based on the reviews I read, I wasn't sure what to expect. As it turns out, this was a great round of golf on a fine course.

-- Conditions - We had a dry day so not swampy but a few regulars I played with said it does dry slowly after rain. Fairways were nice and green and every green was in excellent shape. No irregular grass or bare spots. A few maintenance areas around the course but nothing unusual from other courses.

Weather - Decent breeze most of the day. Blazing sun of course, but a decent amount of trees by the tee boxes for a break from the sun. No bugs to my recollection.

People - One reviewer made it sound like there were going to be boozy craps games going just outside the course. No way. This is a very high-end park for DC. The players were mostly a professional crowd. And, when I was finishing, around 7pm or so, a big influx of 20-somethings were pouring in for beers and buckets on that cool two-deck driving range. Many seemed to make a destination and an evening out of it.

Marshalls - No one rushed us, but marshalls were nicely present and plenty friendly. Beverage cart girl did well, too.

Pro Shop/Concessions - Quite lagging. Tiny pro-shop. If they'd had decent polo shirts, I probably would have bought one. Concession stand seemed to have a great menu enough staff. But, those concession staff workers were so slow and unmotivated I wonder why no complaints have reached them.

Overall, I had a great round and really enjoyed the course. Really cool place, almost trendy. I thought it was at a quality I expect from a good municipal course and I would play there again without hesitation.

My “hometown” course – definitely an “urban” course. Greens do need a little work; lots of beer bottles and cans litter the fairways. Can hear the “musings” of the locals lining Hain’s Point just outside of the course and the smell of BBQ. But what can I say, I love it here. This place has the single BEST driving range that I’ve seen so far. No other course has such a great range. Deff. a muni, but the views are spectacular and given the atmosphere, don’t be too serious – it’s a game!

Place can be swampy - but a good value.

Poor drainage, not maintained all that well. But for the price, in this area, it isn’t that bad. Not a very challenging course, good place to practice.

I played this course three times in June when I was working up there in D.C. for the month. I really enjoyed it. The folks that worked there were nice and the course was in good shape. The greens were a little slow, but they were smooth. The fairways had plenty of grass and the rough was okay but not too thick. The course is flat and forgiving. On several holes you align your tee shot on the Washington Memorial, which makes for a great view off the tee box. The course is heavily played, but it is a good value for the money.

Course condition seems to vary by the season. It does flood occasionally, and after last year's flood was in terrible shape. Now, Jun 2008, it is in pretty good shape, greens are fine, fairways have recovered nicely.
Driving range is weak; 2-level, you have to hit from the upper to see over the hill for shots over 180 yds or so. Can rent a shag bag and 1-of-3 practice greens (100-130 yds, 2 with sand) for about $9 and hour. I play here primarily for location.

This was once a nice easy, wide open course where one could go to have some fun, and I admit I learned to play here. However when I played this past summer the greens had all been destroyed by poor maintenance and I was putting on dirt, and the fairways were mostly weeds. Frankly if you are in the area and thinking of playing golf, just go any where else but here, I have seen cow pastures that are in better shape than this P.O.S.

After resodding recently, the greens were perfect and a bit fast. The fairways and rough both had really nice tight coverage. They did, though, still have temporary greens on two of the holes on the front 9 of the blue course, but otherwise a great outing.

Not bad for $27 on a weekend

The maintenance here is terrible, but it's really the only affordable option within the DC city limits. Full 18 hole course which is usually in mediocre to poor condition....but again, for $27 to walk on a weekend it is a place to swing your clubs. Also, $9 pitchers of Heineken for the 19th hole.
