This is a great old course, a real treat for someone who appreciates more of a links type of play requiring consideration of how the ball runs out (i.e., contours of the land) and not just hitting high soft shots into greens. Just reading the names of past luminaries who played here in the early days - some say this is where the wooden tee was introduced - is a distinct pleasure. Please, if you want ultra lush grass and spongey greens, leave this place alone for the rest of us!!

A public Donald Ross layout. I never pass up the chance to play any of his courses. There is a big difference from the tips verses the middle tee boxes. You need your short game in order to score on this course. The track is wide open otherwise. Hole #1 & Hole #10 watch out for the auto traffic while teeing off from the blues. Hole #4 an uphill par 3 is a hard hole to hit with a turtle back green. Hole#16 & Hole#17 are beautiful viewing holes with the Thames River close bye. The course does need aeration, as the tee boxes are extremely hard. The food and staff at the club house tops off the fun day at the course.

I played the course in early July. Most of the fairways were very hard and dry. Lots of divots from frequent play. The greens were ok. They were on the hard side, but a well struck ball would hold the green. The most scenic hole is #16 where your approach to the green has the mouth of the Thames River as a background. There are patchs of very tall rough placed strategically around the course which make some shots a bit more challenging.

Fun links style course

I think it is a bit pricey, but that's how it is in New England. Fun links style layout provides some open tee shots so you can really air out the driver. Don't be fooled though, if you can par the 4th hole, you have earned it. Easy to walk and the holes from 15-17 are some of the prettiest out there, with great views of the Thames river and the New London Harbor light. Overall, I like this course.
