Course Reviews

This is my new favorite course in this area the greens and fairway are superb!!

Fun course. Great shape. Good staff

I really enjoy this course. Played after it rained all night and this course drains exceptionally well-fairways stayed playable with not standing water. The greens are tough but read true. This is more a thinking course, not too long but placement is important. For the price you can't beat it. The employees are very friendly and you can see they take pride in this course. It is off the same exit as Fire Keepers Casino (exit 104 on I-94). Highly recommend. The review is showing less than what I m putting in, has to be a problem. I rate this overall as 4 1/2

I work 4 days a week in Illinois and drive home to the Lansing area Friday mornings. I often stop here and play this course on the way home, and I love it! The fairways and greens are always in great condition, whether it's been wet, dry, hot, or cold. The greens always hold approach shots and roll true. The course is very playable, but not without it's challenges It's a good course to walk, and an amazing value! I also gave it more stars than are showing up here - some sort of a software glitch, I guess. I give it a 5 for value and 4 overall.

This is a very well maintained course. The greens and fairways are in beautiful shape, even with the very hot weather we've been having. Very fair, interesting. The price is perfect. Don't have to be a long hitter to do well on this course. The clubhouse is a very old home, interesting. No pro shop, but if you just want to golf then visit the nearby casino, this is the place.

I enjoyed playing here. The reviews I've read on this page frightened me off for a while (ironically the "positive" reviews had me convinced this wouldn't be the type of place I was comfortable). The staff was friendly and accomodating. The course was well-maintained and fun. I had a very positive experience on this course and would definitely recommend it.

For a high handicapper like myself, this is a fun course to play. The greens are nice, and the rest of the course is well maintained. For the most part I never felt like I was playing right along side the other holes... each hole seemed to be its own. I went out early on a weekday and took advantage of the earlybird special, so the rates were definitely a good value. For the most part the workers seem friendly. In my opinion, if you can only play 9 make it the front 9.

Played this course on a trip to the midwest. Great course condition-greens awesome compared to Florida cond's. Quaint Victorian clubhouse. The guy behind the bar was quite funny. Not the most challenging course I ever played, but attractive and fun.

Found this xcellent course off I-94 on the way to an MIS NASCAR race. Got on easy. Super soft greens and greens fees were less than $30 for 18 with a cart. I'm told there is a casino going in accross the highway. I'll be back.

GR8 course. Drove past it off I-94 often and saw feature on Fox Sports News. Glad I finally tried it. Xlnt greens and wide fairways. Not ur typical clubhouse.. some kind of old red brick farmhouse but very cool. Owner was nice and talked my ear off. Gave me some free balls cuz he liked me.

I'm goin' on my 23rd year as a member here. That is because the price is right, the course is beautiful and the management caters to real golfers. I know the owners of Oakland Hills and if you read real bad reviews of this course they were probably summitted by people who got busted either 1) trying to play in a fivesome or walking on the course on a weekend morning without a tee time as a twosome 2) Disrespecting rules or common golf etiquet 3) sneaking beer or a girlfriend or small child onto the course 4) or generally doing something that common sense would tell a normal person not to do. I don't like to get held up behind slow play, bad play, rude play or groups larger that a foursome. The folks at Oakland are practically militant about making sure this doesn't happen to me or anyone else. If you don't like to follow commonsence rules or act remotely like a human being, then don't play here. Otherwise, all are welcome.

All of the attention at this place goes into keeping the course nice for golfers. The greens are virtually pure bent grass and smooth as a baby's bottom. No hippity-hop puts, and they're well watered so they hold. Fairways are mowed twice a week, roughs once. If you don't like that, then stay out of the rough. That is why there is a fairway.

Battle Creek has a lot of courses to play on. I have many choices and I choose Oakland Hills. I suspect anyone looking for a fair and fairly priced game on a quality course would choose this place as well.

For you out of towners, just try getting on to Cedar or Binder on a weekend. Good luck. They have so many corporate and other outings. Not that Oakland doesn't, but I could be on the fifth tee and you would still be waiting for the starter to call your party's name. No bull. And don't let any of the winers on this website convince you otherwise.

I've played this course for over ten years and what I know makes me think the local competitors have submitted "shill" reviews to bust Oakland's chops. The course is very well maintained for a public links setup. You never find brown dry spots in the fairways like Binder or some of the other locals. The greens are fantastic, well watered, putt true and hold a ball like a suction cup. Yeah, yardage markers are painted rocks. Tee markers are made of wood. What's your point? You don't put on tee markers or yardage markers do you? There's a reason they don't allow two-somes on weekend mornings... so the foursomes don't have fire breathing down their neck from a couple of dudes who don't have any other friends. This is a first class course that cares about the true golfer's experience. Any of the other crap I've read on this wedsite is just self-centered sour grapes. By the way, both Cedar Creek and Binder Park are more expensive, not cheaper... check any local area website, and don't deprive yourself of enjoying one of the best kept golf secrets in southwestern Michigan.

Not a Four Star Course

I do not know how they rated this a four star course, but it is not. The greens ar good, but not great. Upkeep on the course is below par. Better courses in the area at a cheaper price (Binder Park, Cedar Creek and Marywood and some much better courses if you are willing to pay more (Yarrow, Bedford Valley and Medalist).

Overrated

Definitly not a 4 star course, how that happened is a total wonder. The fairways have 1.5 inch grass, the yardage markers are painted stones on the sides of fairways. And don`t you dare chip onto the practice putting green or you`ll have the mowing monkeys all over your case. However, the greens are very nice and it`s a very playable course that`s possible to shoot a good score on. We played on a sunny Tuesday morning and the parking lot was 2/3 full when we arrived, we had to wait 20 minutes to tee off,it is a popular local course but there`s several in the vicinity that are better that aren`t ranked that I know off. Marywood, and The Medalist, two courses within 15 minutes of Oakland Hills are far superior, although more expensive.

Golf Digest is Wrong

Course was given 4 stars, and we wondered who got paid. I made a t-time for Sat morning and when I arrived there were two cars in the lot. The owner/manager told my partner and I we couldn't play b/c no two-somes b4 noon. Than sends us out on unmown, dew covered unplayable green. I WILL NEVER RETURN. POOR POOR POOR SERVICE AND ETC.
