The 9-hole "Hawthorne" course at the Hawthorne Country Club facility in La Plata, Maryland features 2,999 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36. Designed by Edmund B. Ault, ASGCA/Al Jamison, the Hawthorne golf course opened in 1960.
I played this course because it recently joined the Tee Time Golf Pass and the cost was right $20.00 for 18.Amenities - I really didn't use any of the amenities; however, the Proshop was very small but did seem to be well stocked.Difficulty - Not super difficult. I shot my handicap. Course has some narrow holes and #12 (par 3) plays over 200 yards from an elevated tee. Definitely deserves its #1 handicap rating.Maintenance - Course was in excellent condition. They appeared to have plenty of Maintenance staff on hand. Greens were in great shape and rolled well. Fairways were really nice. The rough was well kept and was just enough that you had to club up to get it out, but not like so many courses where you almost can't get out of it.Scenery - Well, it's a small nine hole course that you play from two different tee locations to two different pin placements. Not ugly, and not in a housing development. Overall the scenery was average.Value - The cost using the Tee Time Coupon was $20.00 with cart for 18. Normal rate is $39.00 (Weekday Rate). I thought the value was great.Overall - A small private course where you play the same 9 twice from different tee locations and to different pin placements. Played on a Friday morning. Course wasn't crowded, pace of play was good. Clubhouse/Pro shop staff were friendly enough, but it was obvious they new I wasn't a member here.My overall experience at this course was slightly above average. I will play it again.
