Course Reviews

For proficient golfers, as good as it gets. Hard? Yes. Unfair, no. You need to man up and take stock of your game or look like a fool. Gil Hanse is as talented as architects get and this is his best so far; Hanse builds a golf course as hard, yard for yard as can be built and as good as can be built.

If you don't like it, you just may not really like to play golf. If you think the greens are unfair, it's because you cannot golf your ball, plain and simple - golf it then you can score. That's the questions a truly good course ask of you. All truly great courses are built from the greens backwards and this one is no different. It is THAT good, top ten US built since 1960. Never pass up an invite, never.

This course is amazing. It looks like it's been there forever. Developer/architect have a real sense of artistry. Fairways are receptive and greens are very complex. Most of the greens have more than 3 or 4 difficult placements. First hole tee to green is not that difficult but make sure you hit your approach to the correct spot or a 3 put is the most likely outcome. In fact, all the greens are like this so it's the type of course where you can never let up if you want to score. The bunker styles and placements provide both visual beauty and definite hazard throughout the 18. Number 2 has rock outcropings on the drive that remind me a lot of Brookline. Hole number 3 is a great par 4 with a big, wide fairway framed by a massive deep bunker on the left and a border bunker outside of the right fairway rough. The hole has a valley towards the end of the fairway that quickly meets a steep, fescued incline that has an angled foot path that takes you to a short fairway that cuts neatly into the slick left to right green complex. There's an interesting bunker in the back left of the green that wraps around and also functions as a left side bunker on hole number 1. Neat! I think the entire course is a huge challenge. Hole number 5 is called Shipwreck (all the holes have names). This hole has a carry over dense scrub pine to a fairway that elevates quickly. The right side of the fairway is diabolical with huge grassy dunes and various, sandy waste areas to capture errant drives. The cherry on the sunday is the narrow, vertical green bordered on the far side by a narrow strip, Tillinghast- style bunker and on the near side by a slightly elevated green complex that only accepts the most accurate shots. I think this is a great hole. The next hole looks like it belongs at Pine Valley. It is a par 3 that any player in the world would tip their cap at. This hole is similar in challenge to Augusta National's great # 12 as you have to hit almost a perfect shot to land and stay on the green. The tee is elevated and it is a 155-165 carry over a huge sandy waste area to a shelf-cut, narrow undulating green. To make par here feels really good. I know because my opponent couldn't wipe the smile off of his face after I took a double B and he made par. It's a beautiful hole. Hole 8 is another par 3 that reminds me very much of Kitansett in Marion, MA. Hole 9 has an elevated tee that must be at least 80-90 feet above the landing area. It's called Geronimo and is a longer par 4 with a green framed by a big (Oak?) tree (in the front right) and a quiet brook on the right side. You then cross under the street to the next 9 holes. Hole 11 is another fine par 3 called "Petrified". This hole has a long carry over beautiful wetlands to another left to right sloping green. There's a cool trail that takes you from the tees all the way to the green and then back out again to hole number 12. In fact, there are neat trails and switchbacks throughout many of the holes on the course. The course is really rustic and would make a beautiful walk even if you weren't interested in golf. There really isn't any fancy bridges or anything over the top like that. They use felled tree limbs as bridges over brooks which gives the club a very natural and "zen" like feel. I won't tell you the rest but if you get a chance you need to play this course. Oh, I almost forgot...it's a walking-only course. At the end of 18 holes I was a bit tired but I would have played a another 18 in a second if I was asked. The Caddies are all dressed in their white overalls and they seem well trained. The clubhouse and locker room are being constructed right now. They appear to be framed in natural Cedar clapboard's and large stones that compliment the structures. It seems to be a crasftsman-type style. Nothing outlandish or big, just tasteful. This club is all about the golf. The staff is great and they do a tasteful job in the current clubhouse which is temporary. I'm sure the new clubhouse will only enhance the amenities.

THE BOSTON CLUB

WHERE DO I START, THE STAFF AT THE CLUB WAS GREAT, THEY WELCOMED US IN THE PARKING LOT MADE US FEEL RIGHT AT HOME. THE TWO CADDIES WE USED THAT DAY (SHANNON AND TOM) WERE VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE, FRIENDLY AND GREAT TO SPEND THE AFTERNOON WITH.THE COURSE... I WAS TOLD IS ONLY 2YEARS OLD, NEEDS A LITTLE TIME TO GROW IN, STILL A LITTLE BARE IN PLACES. THE SCENERY WAS BEAUTIFUL LOTS OF ELEVATION CHANGES. NOW THE COURSE.IN OUR GROUP THERE WAS A 4HCP,6HCP,12HCP AND A 20HCP. WE PLAYED THE MEMBERS TEES SLOPE 138 OR 139.THERE WERE MAYBE 8 PARS BETWEEN ALL OF US FOR THE DAY.............WE ALL THOUGHT THE GREENS WERE VERY UNFAIR! MAYBE WE WERE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE HOLE ALL DAY OR ABOVE THE HOLE BUT WE ALL WALKED AWAY FROM THE COURSE SHAKING OUR HEADS.MAYBE ITS A COURSE YOU NEED TO PLAY A FEW TIMES TO GET USED TO IT. IT WAS A TOUGH WALK FOR A FEW OF THE PLAYERS IN OUR GROUP.WE HAVE ALL PLAYED ALOT OF THE PRIVATE COURSES IN THE AREA BUT FOUND THE BOSTON CLUB TO BE THE MOST DIFFUCULT BY FAR......... IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO PLAY IT GO FOR IT LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK...GOOD LUCK
