StoneTree Golf Club , Novato, CA

Played Stone Tree in March of 2010 on a Saturday around 10am. I got lucky because I was paired with the nicest couple with valuable local knowledge.
Stone Tree is a true pleasure to play, especially with someone who can give you knowledge of how each hole plays. You don’t need to bomb drivers, great place to learn course management. Yardage markers visible, fairways and greens very well taken care of. 4 tee boxes, Tips(shoots 60s-70s), Black (70-low 80s) Blue(high 80-90s) The forth is the forward white tees. Most amateurs that shoot in the 90s mistakenly play from the Blacks.
No driving range, a netted area with complimentary balls to hit. About eight hitting stalls. Putting green/chipping area. Nice restaurant/bar. Good food. A country club feel. Golf staff was extremely courteous and helpful.
The greens roll true. I recall one massive false front (13?) You will need to hit specific areas of these challenging greens to avoid three putting. But expect to three putt more than your average. Fairways are narrow at times, this course favors the golfer that slows the swing down and hits straight rather than spraying a 290 yard drive. Unfortunately I hit three OBs, took three unplayable’s, and three putted more than I’d like to share, however, I still had lots of fun here shooting my terrible high score. The views are worth it!

Beautiful, well maintained course. Warm up cage but no range. This pricey course is very, very busy on weekends; have played there 3X never been able to complete a round.

one of my favorite courses in the bay area, tough like all Miller designs are and having eye pleasing looks (more on the back where you play into a forest of mature trees with crazy elevations) this is a course you should play when in the N bay (about 35 mins N of SF off 101) wonderful facilities (not uncommon to see wedding parties there on the weekends) and very professional staff...

When we arrived at Stone Tree we were not really sure what to expect. The client had chosen the course and what I had seen on-line did not give me pause. The ammenities are great, this is the type of course where guys load your clubs into the cart before the round and clean them after. The clubhouse and pro-shop are amazing, but keep in mind this course just opened in 2000.

The first hole is not particularly difficult, but is beautiful. However, once you hit the second hole, the course narrows, there are huge trees lining the fairway, dramatic changes in elevation, and you start playing up one of the sides of the mountains. The entire course is green, lush and tightly lined with trees.

When we played, all three of us were amazed at how difficult the course was, requiring a refined game and ability to play target course. Now, we had a great time, and will play there again, but after playing in CO where there are nowhere near as many trees, it was a bit of a shock. We lost a large number of balls and felt, at the end, as if we had just been through a football game.

There is a Par 3 on the back nine that goes over a canyon, a beautiful hole, but the depth of the canyon and distance create visual anamolies which made it difficult to accurately judge the distance.

All in all Stone Tree is an amazing course, and at $80 per player a little steeper than I might be used to, but definately a course to play again. Just make sure, if your game is not predictable, to approach it with an open mind.
