Course Reviews

fun and challeging..worth every dollar..rolling fairways and a variety of green sizes...deep bunkers. this course reminds me of Vistal golf course just 20 miles east of Aguila. the differnece? Aguila is 5 times cheaper than a flashy Vistal golf club. all they do is shine oyur clubs and kiis your butt!! Go to Aguila.

This is a very fun and challenging course. You must stay out of the desert in order to score well. If you tend to hit errant tee shots, plan on losing balls! I don't know how the handicap rating works but I would have to disagree with some of the ratings. The 17th hole (rated 14) in particular is particularly intimidating off the tee and if you don't hit the fairway you are left with a blind shot with water coming into play (and a penalty stroke for a drop!). All in all a great value and a lot of fun. The scenery is good if you can block out the immediate Laveen area. The staff is friendly and the course is pretty well maintained.

Great muni

If you are in Phoenix and want to are in luck. There are TONS of golf courses that are very very good. As for Muni's, this is one of the best. And the price is great. You cant go wrong here. Trust me you will love this course.

The best kept secret for affordable golf in Phoenix

I almost hesitated to write this review, because I don't want the course to get so popular that I can't get on it, but I no longer live in close proximinity to the course, so it's only fair that I let others know what a quality course this is. And, it's among the most affordable of Arizona's already modestly priced golfing options. The course was built in 2000 or thereabouts by the City of Phoenix and they did a great job of it.

There are actually two courses here: A championship 18 hole layout that measures almost 7,000 yards from the back tees, and a very challenging and fun to play 9-hole par 3 layout. Aguila is exceptionally well designed for golfing variety. It has just about every kind of hole imaginable, and is layed out out with plenty of 'breathing room' over some very pretty desert landscape, sandwiched between South Mountain and the Estrella Mountains to the south and west. Convenient to get to, Aguila is located within 20 minutes of downtown Phoenix, and southwest of the Metro area. The terrain is moderately hilly, and pleasantly walkable. I've played it many times and almost always was walking my round with my golfing pals. That's another great thing about municipal courses. They give the golfer the option to actually WALK and get some excercise!

The holes; Aguila has a superb collection of holes that make up a great mix all put together. What stands out to me most are the par 5 holes. Each one has a distinct character and varys in length... My vote for the best being the short but dangerous slight dogleg left 5th hole. At 480 yards or so, it can be reached in two shots, but there is desert quagmire all the way down the left side. Number 6 is an insidiously easy looking but VERY difficult short par 4. Due to a very strategically placed and sloping green, theres more ways to mess up a decent round on this one hole alone than I care to mention (yes, I know from experience). There are two very fun short par 4 holes: the 8th and the 17th. At 270 and 310 yards respectively, both holes can be driven, however there is high risk reward factor as they require a long carry over water. There is a VERY short par 3 on the back nine, the 13th, that is only about 90 yards but is what I consider the most dangerous hole on the course, due to convex contoured green. If you don't float your wedge shot in the correct spot on the green it will roll off into god forsaken places. Each nine hole link ends with a beauty, both are very tough, uphill and long par 4's that share a lake between their greens. There is also a resident coyote that has staked his claim to the ninth, and tenth fairways and routinely surveys his domain.

All and all, Aguila is a surprisingly excellent course layout, especially for a municipal course, and is fairly well maintained too. The desert/mountain scenery is lovely. If you are in the Phoenix area, check it out.
