Course Reviews

I was traveling in South Georgia and saw this course online and figured, why not. Was I glad I did. This course is in the mountains and has some awesome holes and views. The greens were well kept but the course needed some work. I didn't mind because I like the natural look of the course. I had a great time and can't wait to pass through there again so I can play it..Did I mention the price was $14 with a cart on a Sunday...Wow!!

Not sure where the other guys are playing that have rated this golf course but their posts can be deceiving. I have played many courses in the metro area and I have played many better than this.

I played on Sunday morning, November the 15th. The pace of play was excellent, however, I had to start on number 10 (old number one) because there was a fousome on the green at number one and then a twosome on the tee waiting to tee off. I really was not crazy about a four and a half hour round so I opted to go off number 10 first. I am glad I did because I was finished in less than 3 and a half hours.

The course is not in that great of shape. The fairways and tee boxes are reversed meaning that the tee boxes are shaggy requiring use of the "long" tees and the fairways are cut way to "tight." There is also a multitude of weed growth in the fairways.

I did welcome the change in the greens from bent grass to champions bermuda, however, there are patches of bent grass growing up in the bermuda that make putting less than favorable. I hit several putts that were on a good line and had a chance to go in only to hit a patch of the bent grass and get "kicked" off line.

The value factor was good because I got a discounted rate off of a website. $20.00 with cart on a Sunday morning, anywhere cannot be beat.

The cart paths are less than desirable as well. Too many tree roots starting to grow through the pavement make for a bumpy ride. Also, there are a few potholes that are filled with water, that if you don't know how deep they are, you better slow down or you could get hurt.

This really should be a 17 hole course. When you get to number 13, just write down par and go straight to 14. What a gimmicky hole. Par five that you have to hit hybrid or long iron off the tee is no par five in my mind. They should really cut down some of trees left of the ditch where it goes over towards the road and think about widening the fairway. Also, the bushes in front of the marsh were so tall that I could not see the flag, nor have any idea where the green was. I had to ride all the way up to the green just to get an idea of where to hit my next shot. Also, there is no way to hit over the marsh on the lay up. After you tee off, you are left laying up with a pitching wedge or even sand wedge and are left with about 130 to 140 yards to the green. More trees need to be cut down left, the marsh needs to be filled in some and the bushes and overgrowth in front of the green need to come out to facilitate a view of the green.

Don't get me wrong, I know that this review sounds very critical but overall I like the course. It could be a great course one day given the proper attention and maintenance practices. I will probably play again but will limit my visits to probably once every two months or so. I give Hickory Ridge an overall rating of C- at the best. Sorry guys, there are plenty of better courses out there that are just as affordable.

Hopefully the owners(s) can get enough play to put some money back into the course and it may well be one of the better courses south of the airport.

Wow !!!! I played this course on Oct.4,2009. I think this is the best course I have played in Geogia thus far. When I come home this will be the first course of chioce hands down. It's not a boring or hard course at all if you manage your shot selection well. I LOVE THIS COURSE !!!. Oh did I mention to bring your cameras for great shots of the scenery of you playing golf. And the sand traps have real sand, not that georgia clay to hit out of. Can't wait to get back to play again. Nice staff as well.

Once they finish the clubhouse and add a few necessities to the course it will be a gem. All that's needed are hole markers at the tee boxes and a few more yardage markers on the fairways. The course is difficult but not too bad. The views are great, a very scenic course.

This was definately a suprise, when getting to the course I was a little leary, but as we got on the course realized for the price could'nt be beat, it was so much fun to play with some very different shot views. Besides the fact no club house and no snack cart (so bring your own) this was one of my favorites and I look forward to playing it more often and did I mention the price, you gotta play this one if you get a chance.
