Course Reviews

Rock Creek is the worst garbage course I've ever shot. A sign in the clubhouse acknowledges "substandard conditions" and offers 1/2 off a cart rental. The course is in terrible shape.

First off, let me say that I like this course, it’s fun and challenging (on the back 9)…. BUT, they need to give it a lot more attention and a little more $ to make it great. The back 9 are challenging and we had a very fun game.

This course gets poor marks when it comes to some fairways – 3 had eroded to dirt and or mud in patches. Some Ts are worn and muddy. And finally, the roughs on many holes are nothing more than weed filled areas that suffer from neglect! One rough was filled with nettles that did a number on my ankles when I went to look for a friend’s lost ball.

If a competent manager would give this old course a good renovation – it would be a destination for golfers in DC!!! Better conditions = more golfers…..more golfers = more funds for better upkeep! The potential here makes me want to quite my job and enlist as grounds keeper just to get the place whipped into shape…wont’ take much more than elbow grease and a desire to make the place shine.

I’ll be going back despite the wear & tear.

Spent years living in DC but had never played Rock Creek. I read the reviews and I was a little apprehensive, too. However, I had a fantastic round of golf.

Excellent fairways and green. For some reason, I was worried the course would be rocky with bare spots in the fairways. Nope, good grass all around, appropriate rough. Some greens kind of small.

Hard ground. Yep, the grass is fine but the ground is very, very hard. Big rolls, big bounces.

Terrain. Lots of it. No annoying micro terrain, just big slopes, cool tee or green elevations, big slopes and rollers. I used a handcart because I wanted to max out the exercise factor and it really did max me out.

Tight fairways. A few are very tight, it takes a steady drive to stay on a few of these. However, lay up opportunities abound for players who want to make a more careful approach.

Environment. Very hot, a few nice shady spots. Decent amount of breeze. Maybe just got lucky. Bugs. Plenty of 'em. I don't think there were any mosquitos, but there were a decent amount of small, gnat-like bugs getting in myh way. I'm not sure one ever bit or even landed on me, but it was a bit annoying. Would not even slightly deter me from returning.

Gotta mention: I had a really great round. I played solo and wouldn't you know, with no friends or tournament at stake, I was really hitting. Highlight was a lucky break playing a slice into the dogleg on #14.

grass and cart path could be maintained better but enjoyed playing otherwise, and plan on playing more in the future.

This course is very close to my home, so I play it often; the back nine saves this course and is my favorite of the three courses in Washington DC in regards to challenge. This Par 65 course has a mean back nine for the beginning and intermediate golfer. Unfortunately, the entire course has no water hazards despite being in Rock Creek (you would think that there would be some tributaries from the creek to make this course more challenging, but there are none). The front nine is okay, but the back nine really saves this course from being a goat farm. The back nine contains narrow fairways which makes it a good challenge for the beginning golfer. One hole in particular, number 14 (I think) has an elevated tee which leads to a valley and doglegs to the right. This is probably the best and most challenging hole on the course. All par 3's and 4's, no par 5's. Maintenance can use a big boost, poor amenities. decent difficulty (on the back nine) okay scenery, decent value. Not good for experienced golfers or those that are used to well maintained courses like Bulle Rock, Enterprise, Renditions etc,; but a good value for 20+ handicap golfers that don't want to spend much money and want somewhat of a challenge. A very good back nine for practicing and preparing for other courses.

some unique challenges

poorly-mainted muni is short, but the narrow fairways lined with thick woods make some interesting challenges, as does the bumpy, rocky ground.
