Course Reviews

I play this course approximately 3 times a week. I have been a Gold Member for 7-10 years. The staff are very friendly. The do not enforce any dress code or behavior codes.

The condition of the greens has deteriorated and a quest of mine recently referred to the bunkers as "gravel Quarries". The waste bunker on hole 12 and 15 have better sand than the bunker on hole 6. The Bunker on hole 6 is nearly hard pan. The bunker condition will totally destroy a set of wedges within three rounds of play. I have two views of cost. #1 if the product merits the cost then the project is worth the cost to play. #2 if the cost is high but the quality of the course is poor. then then why pay the cost? Higher cost eliminate those who do not respect the course. Lower cost courses, generally have plays with no regard to dress code, poor course behavior, and reuslts in poor course management. The course should have a started at all times, and an on course player assistant. The player assistant should kindly, polity tell players when they violate rules. There names (via the cart signed out to them) should be kept on record. I will bet, that most people do not mind paying for quality and an enjoyable round of golf.

I like this coure and when the wind is blowing, it can be an absolute bear. The finishing holes on both 9's are great. Pro Shop folks are very nice and accomodating. Great value in the early afternoon.

Your experience will be determined by the wind, but the course itself is pretty nice. There is not too much that is visually appealing but a fair amount of water on the course. The price it is alright for the course, a bit high, but the pace is good for the price.

I used to love this course but since they recently jacked the price up to $54.00. I will probably will not play at this course as much. It's a nice course but it is a 40 buck course.

Let the Big Dog Eat!

The Reserve at Spanos is a big hitters dream. It is a links style course of 7000 yards from the tips with very generous fairways. You can spray the ball on most of the holes and get away with it. Distance is a priceless asset from the tips here. There are multiple tees that cut significant distance off of each hole and give good angles of attack to the beginning golfer. There is a lot of water on the course although not much comes into play for the better player as it is mostly visual. The real challenge to this course is when the wind kicks up to 25mph or more. The greens are midsized and receptive playing slightly faster than the local muni courses, but very fair. Many of the holes allow for multiple options of attack, with the bump and run getting a lot of use. The course is maintained slightly better than the local muni's, but it is not perfect. The par 3's are all very difficult and require precision at 170-200yds. The par 5's are reachable for the big hitter, but require some thought before you go for them. The hole that you will remember is the 467yd par 4 17th. This monster of a hole has water right and out of bounds left. The fairway is generous with a lot of visual intimidation and the wind is predominately right to left. The second shot gets no easier as the water is cut close on the right with the green severely sloped towards the water. The green is also protected by a bunker to the left of the green and a very nasty pot bunker front left. Unless you feel like being a hero, lay up and take your chances with a chip and a putt. The Spanos professional golf tour plays here twice a year and the course is immaculate before and after the tourneys. The course has a double sided driving range with plenty of room and a small short game area at the south end. The pro shop is generally understocked so bring your Pro-V1x's with you. This course has the absolute best deals if you want to become a member in the Stockton area. Weekdays after 10am provide the chance to have the course to yourself if there is no tournament scheduled which is often. The course does not have much scenery as there is farmland on all sides, but thankfully no houses. This is a step up from the muni tracks but it is not so difficult that beginners can't enjoy it. If you are in Stockton, this is your best option for a good round of golf.
