Valley of the Moon Club in Santa Rosa is one of the best golf deals in all of Sonoma County. You would expect a course this nice, with the views it has, and all of the amenities to cost a lot more than $59 to walk or $73 to ride during peak times. The facility also includes the executive Sugarloaf Course. If you have a little extra time you can play both in the same day, which is a lot of fun. The Valley of the Moon course plays just over 6,300 yards with a par of 72, rating of 71.1, and the slope is 124. While the yardage won’t scare you, it’s plenty challenging. The rye grass runs really fast when it’s dry and the rough becomes challenging when they let it grow. All of the par 3’s are gettable, except for the the fifth hole which is 213 yards from the back tees. The 15th hole is the longest on the course, a 537-yard beast that doglegs to the left. You’ve got houses to deal with on both sides for your tee shot, which is unsettling to begin with. Knowing you have to rip your drive to have any chance of making birdie or par is also unsettling. Inside the clubhouse is Oak, a great restaurant even if you’re not there to play golf. They have amazing pizza and sliders and also know how to cook a great piece of salmon. They also have brunch on the weekends if you can catch that before your round. Another highlight is the double-ended driving range, so you always have a spot to practice, along with a nice short game area. The course is right off of Sonoma Highway, so you can’t miss it.
