Pasatiempo Golf Course, Santa Cruz, CA

Playing Pasatiempo is a memorable experience. Every shot requires a clear-headed strategy to navigate to the next shot ... and so on. The layout is varied and extremely challenging without being "tricked up" or unfair. As with other classic layouts it is a walking course best enjoyed and attacked from ground level. Sure it's a bit hilly, but easily walkable for most golfers (I'm in my 60's and had no problems). The clubhouse is disappointing - nondescript for such an historic venue and the driving range is poorly situated but those are minor complaints easily offset by the outstanding staff, great conditions and overall quality of the golfing experience.

Pasatiempo, when it is in good shape, is awesome. This is where Alistair McKenzie retired to. It has a coupel funky holes and ends in a PAR 3 but I always enjoy playing here. It's not the best out there but it's worth playing.

This is a nice course with a mix of some great holes and some tricked up holes requiring blind shots. When I played (7/18/09) the course was not in very good condition especially given the green fees. Also this is a semi-private course and one 'member' that I had an interaction with was an unpleasant snob who jumped in front of my group on the first tee. For the price there are far better courses in the bay area to play. They are charging a significant and unjuustified premium b/c it is an Alister MacKenzie design and in my opion this course is over-hyped.
