The first major of the PGA Tour kicks off this August 6-9 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. A completely stacked field will be competing, as 95 of the top-100 golfers in the world have committed to play. The field includes veterans Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk as well as new world number 1 Justin Thomas, and number 2 Jon Rahm and number 3 Rory Mcilroy close behind. Brooks Koepka returns after a close call last week at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational to try and claim the first PGA Championship 3-pete in the modern stroke play era and the first in any format since Walter Hagen nearly 100 years ago. Standing in his way will be the ever tricky TPC Harding Park.

Host Course: TPC Harding Park

TPC Harding Park hosts the PGA Championship for the first time. (Keyur Khamar/PGA TOUR)The course is one of Northern California’s best known and arguably the West Coast’s best muni. TPC Harding Park was founded as Harding Park Golf Club in 1925 and named after former President Warren G. Harding. The course was designed by Sam Whiting and Willie Watson as a classic parkland course and was given an update to bring the course up to modern lengths in the early 2000s. This is the first major championship hosted by but it has hosted multiple high profile tournaments, including the 2005 WGC-American Express Championship, 2009 Presidents Cup, and the 2015 WGC-Match Play Championship. Fans should expect water to come into play often, as the course borders Lake Merced, with wooded roughs also punishing errant shots. Success will come from playing accurate strategic golf and don’t be surprised if a solid game by one of the less heralded drivers of the ball doesn’t result in a challenge for the title.
