2020 Honda Classic: Spectator Information

By Ryan Watson

The PGA Tour heads to Florida for the 2020 Honda Classic, Feb. 27-March 1, at the PGA National Golf Club. A strong field will contend for the title with Justin Rose, Brooks Koepka, and Rickie Fowler all committed to attending. Last year’s surprise 6th-place finisher Vijay Singh is also back looking for more magic at the age of 56. The Jack Nicklaus designed Champion Course awaits the field with the always difficult home stretch known as the Bear Trap.

Tournament History

The tournament was founded in 1972 as Jackie Gleason’s Inverrary Classic, and was hosted by the classic star of the Honeymooners. Gleason was an avid golfer who purportedly moved to Florida so he could golf year round. The original host course was the Inverrary Country Club, located near Ft. Lauderdale. Gleason ceased hosting duties in 1980, and after 1983 the tournament began bouncing around various Florida courses. The tournament has been sponsored by Honda since 1982, making it one of the longest running partnerships on the PGA Tour.

The tournament has seen numerous prestigious former champions, including Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Vijay Singh, Matt Kuchar, Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas. The tournament has also seen many memorable moments: Mark Calcavecchia won the first of 2 Honda Classics in 1987 just a year after caddying the event. Nicklaus also won 3 consecutive tournaments during the tournament’s first run at the Inverrary, claiming the 1976 Players Championship and then the 1977 and 1978 Honda Classics.
