2020 WGC-Mexico Championship: Field Preview

By Ryan Watson

The first World Golf Championship event of 2020 gets underway this weekend as the WGC-Mexico Championship kicks off at Mexico City’s  Club de Golf Chapultepec. The event is one of the most prestigious and lucrative in world golf outside of the majors, and will feature a smaller field of 72 golfers. The field is chosen from the best of the PGA Tour and European Tour, thereby guaranteeing that the world’s best golfers receive an invitation to the tournament. One of those playing this year is defending champion Dustin Johnson.

2019 Champion Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson started off the 2019 WGC-Mexico Championship with an impressive opening round 64, a full -7 under par. Only Rory McIlroy bested him with his own opening round 63. However, McIlroy and the rest of the field were unable to keep up with Johmsom over 4 rounds as he pulled ahead, finally winning the event by 5 strokes over McIlroy to claim his 2nd WGC-Mexico title in 3 years.

Field Preview

Dustin Johnson faces a stern test in claiming his third WGC-Mexico Championship. Chief among his competitors is last year’s runner up, Rory McIlroy, now ranked first in the world and reigning FedExCup champion. The Northern Irishman will complete a so-called “WGC Grand Slam” if he wins this year, as he already has victories in the other 3 WGC events. Other challengers include Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Reed. Local favorite Abraham Ancer will be joined by his compatriot Carlos Ortiz as they attempt to be the first Mexican golfer to win the competition.
