The PGA Tour heads back to the golfer’s paradise of California’s Monterey Peninsula for the 2020 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The event routinely attracts the best golfers to compete on the 3 world class courses to decide a winner: Monterey Peninsula Country Club, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and Pebble Beach Golf Links. The field this year is particularly strong with defending champion Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, and Dustin Johnson all slated to play. Celebrities competing in the pro-am this year include noted sportsmen Wayne Gretzky, Aaron Rodgers, and brothers Eli and Peyton Manning.

Tournament History

The Pebble Beach Pro-Am began as the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am in 1937. Crosby, one of the biggest celebrities of his time, was also an avid golfer and helped lend the tournament both its star power and also its laid back feel. Before WWII, the tournament took place in San Diego at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. From the beginning, the tournament attracted the biggest names in golf with Hall of Famer Sam Snead winning the inaugural event. The tournament took a break during WWII, returning in 1947 to its current home on the Monterey Peninsula. The tournament became known colloquially as the “Crosby Clambake” for the customary clambake held before tournament play began.

The format of the tournament sees a concurrent individual professional event and a pro-am better ball event. After 3 rounds, the low 60 scores and any ties advance in the professional event, while the low 25 teams plus ties advance in the pro-am event. The tournament has seen wins from the best golfers in the history of the sport, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Fuzzy Zoeller, Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods, and Dustin Johnson, among others. Mark O’Meara and Phil Mickelson have the most titles with 5, while Sam Snead can claim 4 wins.
