2019 WGC-HSBC Champions: Spectator Information


 

The World Golf Championship (WGC) - HSBC Champions begins this Wednesday, Oct. 30 before wrapping up early on Sunday morning, November 2, at Shanghai’s Sheshan Golf Club. The event is the 4th WGC event of 2019, and the first of the new 2019-2020 PGA Tour schedule. A strong field is set to tee off, including defending champion Xander Schauffele, FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Shane Lowry. 


Tournament History

The HSBC Champions was founded in 2005 and became an official WGC event in 2009. It is the highest profile event in East Asia, and has been held at Sheshan Golf Club every year but 2012, when it was played at Shenhen’s Mission Hills Golf Club. The field is invitation only, with 78 of the best golfers in the world extended an invite. The tournament also allots 6 spots specifically for Chinese golfers in order to grow the game in the event’s host country.

The tournament has seen numerous high profile champions, including Sergio Garcia, Francesco Molinari and Bubba Watson. Dustin Johnson holds the record score with his -24 victory in 2013, while Hideki Matsuyama’s 7 stroke victory over Daniel Berger and Henrik Stenson in 2016 is the largest margin of victory recorded in the tournament. The event is noted for its international flair, with its 15 winners coming from 8 different countries. Phil Mickelson, set to compete again this year, is the only multiple champion with wins coming in 2007 and 2009.

Media Coverage

Television coverage of the WGC-HSBC Champions is provided by the Golf Channel. Coverage starts late on Wednesday and Thursday, 10pm-4am ET. Coverage Friday and Saturday begins at 10:30pm-4am ET with the tournament ending early Sunday morning. There will be no streaming coverage from PGA Tour Live or radion coverage through PGA Tour Radio of the event.
