2019 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open: Spectator Information

By Ryan Watson

The PGA Tour rolls on into October with the 36th edition of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open this weekend, October 3-6. The tournament takes place in sunny Las Vegas at the Bobby Weed designed TPC Summerlin. The event helps fund the Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 non-profit hospitals that provide care for orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate surgeries regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. The field coming to Nevada looks strong with Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Cantlay and Adam Scott all teeing up, along with Greenbrier Classic winner Joaquin Niemann.

Tournament History

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open was founded in 1983 as a bit of an oddity: the then named Panasonic Las Vegas Pro Celebrity Classic was played over 5 rounds over multiple courses. The 5 rounds were dropped to the standard 4 only in 2004, making it a marathon of golf unlike other tournaments for most of its history. The tournament lived up to its Vegas image by offering a then-record purse of $750,000 in its first ear and also became the first PGA Tour event to offer a purse over $1 million in 1984.

The tournament has seen many notable past champions, including inaugural champion Fuzzy Zoeller, and 1985 champion Curtis Strange. The tournament has become a part of history as the site of Tiger Woods’ first PGA Tour win in 1996 via playoff over Davis Love III. The only multiple winner in the history of the tournament is Jim Furyk, a 3-time winner (1995, 1998, & 1999). The tournament also saw Jonathan Byrd win a playoff over Martin Laird and Cameron Percy in 2010 with an ace, the only playoff win by a hole-in-one in PGA Tour history.
