2019 Sanderson Farms Championship: Field Preview

The PGA Tour rolls on into its second week as the Sanderson Farms Championship makes it’s jump from an alternate event to fully-fledged PGA Tour event this weekend, September 19-22. The tournament, founded in 1968, is played at the Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi. The John Fought design stretches 7,421 yards and will favor long hitters and accurate approach shots as the golfers look to jump to an early lead in the FedEx Cup leaderboard.

Cameron Champ was a PGA Tour rookie heading into only his second start when he waltzed into Jackson last October. The Texas A&M alumni had played his way to a PGA Tour card through his performance on the developmental Korn Ferry Tour. Still, despite his previously strong play, no one seriously expected Champ to pick up his first Tour win so early. In fact, Champ had considered returning to A&M for his senior year until earning his Tour card. Champ entered into the final round tied with Corey Connors, with nothing separating the golfer on the first 12 holes. Then Champ would rattle off 5 birdies on the closing holes to earn an impressive 4-stroke victory. The win was Champ's first and was part of a strong fall that included 3 top-10 finishes.

Champ will face a sterner test this year knowing that the event is no longer an alternate one. Sungje Im, 2019 Rookie of the Year, will hope to build on his performance at the Tour Championship into a first PGA Tour win. Scottie Scheffler looks to follow in Champ’s footsteps as he plays his second PGA Tour event after stepping up from the Korn Ferry Tour. 2019 runner-up Corey Conners will have another try along with fellow Canadians Mackenzie Hughes and 2014 champion Nick Taylor. Presidents Cup assistant Zach Johnson rounds out a hungry field of golfers. The tournament often produces first time winners, so don't be shocked when a new face makes its way up to the podium.
