2019-2020 PGA Tour Schedule Features Changes

By Ryan Watson

The 2019-2020 PGA Tour Schedule will be expanded to 49 events, up from 46 in 2018-2019, and begins the new year round schedule. The tour will start in September and wrap up in August with the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The most drastic change to scheduling comes as the PGA Tour accommodates the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. With many of the world’s top golfers expected to compete, the PGA Tour will take a week off during the Olympic golf tournament July 27-August 2, which also happens to be the week before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin. Other changes are an extended “opening portion” of the regular season, with 11 events occurring from September through November before the PGA Tour's winter break.

New Events

There are 2 new events coming to the PGA Tour next year. The Zozo Championship will begin play next season at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in the greater Tokyo area. This represents the first PGA Tour event taking place in Japan and is a joint event between the PGA Tour and Japan Golf Tour. The other new event is the Bermuda Championship, an alternate competition to the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament.

Returning Events

There are also 2 events returning to the 2020 PGA Tour next season. The Houston Open comes back after a 1 year hiatus with a new fall date, as the tournament established in 1946 enjoys tees off in October. The tournament is due to be hosted by the Golf Club of Houston. The other returning event is the Greenbrier Classic which is now the opening event of the PGA Tour. The event has traditionally been a summer event, but now golfers will enjoy fall golf in the West Virginia hills.
