The first 3M Open kicks off in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul this weekend, July 4-7, at the TPC Twin Cities. While it is the first time the event takes place on the PGA Tour, the event has its roots in the PGA Tour Champions event known as the 3M Championship. That event was held at the TPC Twin Cities from 1993 until last year, when it was announced that Minnesota would be receiving its first recurring PGA Tour event in over 50 years. The field for the inaugural event looks strong with Brooks Koepka, Jason Day, Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed all scheduled to take part in the event.

The TPC Twin Cities first opened in 2000 with a course designed by legendary golfer and famed course designer Arnold Palmer. The course has been upgraded this year to increase the challenge for PGA Tour players, but remains otherwise unchanged from Palmer's initial design. The layout features water heavily, with over 27 separate bodies of water including some use of natural wetlands. Holes that are surrounded by water feature forested surrounding ready to punish errant shots. Still, the course is seen as forgiving and fans should expect a lot of birdies this weekend in Minnesota.
