2019 Travelers Championship: Field Preview

By Ryan Watson

The Travelers Open takes place at the TPC River Highlands this weekend, June 20-23, in the greater Hartford, CT area. The tournament is one of the best attended on the PGA Tour and has roots back to 1952. Golfer will tee off on a course that was formerly part of the Edgewood Country Club until the PGA bought the property and Pete Dye redesigned the course in 1984. The course is known to favor big hitters and should enjoy plenty of action of the tee. The tournament has seen many notable moments, including Jim Furyk shooting a 58 in 2016, the lowest score ever carded at a PGA Tour event. The tournament's pedigree is shown in its past champions, including Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson, Sam Snead and Jordan Spieth. Hall of Famer Billy Casper has the most Travelers Championship wins with 4, 1 more than 2018 champion Bubba Watson.

2018 Champion Bubba Watson

Watson started the 4th round of the 2019 Travelers Championship a full 6 strokes behind leader Paul Casey. Casey needed to have a steady hand to see out the tournament but unfortunately for him would see his lead evaporate slowly over the day. Watson hit 5 birdies on the back 9 to close the gap by the 15th hole as Casey played in the day's last pairing. With his score still tied with Casey, Watson stepped up the 18th hole searching for another bit of magic. When his second shot rested within a yard of the hole it looked like Watson might have his 3rd Travelers Championship title wrapped up. Still, Casey had to finish and if not for some bad luck that saw his ball land at the base of the only tree on a fairway, he might have at least forced a playoff. Instead, Casey would finish the round with a score of 72 to Watson’s 63, handing Watson his 3rd Travelers Championship title.

Field Preview

Watson may have 3 of the last 9 Travelers Championships, but he has yet to repeat as champion. If he can manage to win this weekend he will tie Billy Casper’s record of 4 wins. Standing in his way are many talented golfers including Phil Mickelson. Mickelson is a 2-time Travelers Championship winner and despite being 49 has already proven his credentials with 1 win and 2 top-10 finishes this year. U.S. Open runner up Brooks Koepka also is set to tee off this week along with 2019 Travelers Championship runner up Paul Casey. Patrick Cantlay turned heads in 2011 when as an amateur he scored a round of 60 at the tournament and will hope to challenge this year. The tournament has finished in a playoff on 3 of the last 6 editions, so another close finish could be in the cards in Connecticut.
