2019 Farmers Insurance Recap: Justin Rose Takes the Title

By Ryan Watson

The 2019 Farmers Insurance wrapped up Sunday, January 27th and saw world number 1 Justin Rose claim his first win of the season. Rose was coping with playing a new set of Honma clubs after switching sponsors and was without regular caddie Mark Fulcher who is recovering from heart surgery, Nevertheless, he played electrifying golf throughout the weekend, setting the 54 hole scoring record with an impressive -18. However, a painfully slow start to his final round looked as if it might derail Rose’s fine tournament. Rose hit 3 bogeys on his opening 5 holes, reducing his lead to one stroke. However, Rose followed this wobble by hitting 5 birdies and finishing the round with a -21 overall score and a 2-stroke victory over Australian Adam Scott.  Rose’s performance produced the lowest score in 20 years as his 4 round sub-70 performance was the first at the tournament since 1995, when Torrey Pines courses were 700 yards shorter. In all, the tournament showed exactly why Rose is considered the best golfer in the world right now. After Rose and Scott, third place was shared by Hideki Matsuyama and PGA Tour Rookie Talor Gooch, while defending champion Jason Day ended the tournament tied with Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy in 5th a full 7 strokes behind the winner Rose. Tiger Woods couldn’t capture his 8th Farmers Insurance Open, but did manage to finish T20 with a strong final round score of 5 under par.
