2018 Hero World Challenge Field Preview

By Ryan Watson

The Hero World Challenge begins this Thursday, November 29 in Albany, Bahamas and plays over four rounds before wrapping up on Sunday, December 2. The tournament is hosted by Tiger Woods and benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation with all winnings going to charity. The unofficial PGA Tour event is by invitation only and features a reduced field of 18 players. The small field is made up of last year’s major winners, the defending champion, the 11 top-ranked golfers available, and 2 sponsor exemptions. If any major winners or former champion declines their invitation then their position is given to the next available top-ranked golfer. In the past few years, one of the 2 exceptions went to tournament host Tiger Woods; however, after a resurgent last season Woods’ own ranking is high enough for automatic entry. Instead, this year’s exemptions fall to Swedish golfer Henrik Stenson and American golfer Gary Woodland. The field features 4 of golf’s top-5 players and 12 of the top-15 with heavy hitters like Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose and Bryson DeChambeau all teeing off this weekend. The exceptionally strong field means any golfer has a realistic chance of winning the event.
