The PGA Tour returns to Mexico’s El Camaleon Golf Club for the 12th time for the Mayakoba Golf Classic November 8-11. The course is well known for incorporating lush jungle landscapes, ocean-side holes and mangrove swamps into the layout, and also includes a small cave on the 7th hole. The Mayakoba Golf Classic has seen its stature grow from an alternative event in 2007 to its current status as one of the last primary events before the PGA Tour’s winter break. As such, it provides golfers with an excellent opportunity to jump out to an early lead in the FedEx Cup standings.
Patton Kizzire returns as defending champion to the site of his first PGA Tour win. Kizzire hopes to reclaim his 2017 form where he defeated powerhouse Rickie Fowler by 1 stroke. Fowler is also scheduled to tee off this weekend. Fowler, along with Jordan Spieth, are considered the early tournament favorites. Other contenders include Cameron Champ, fresh off of his first PGA Tour win 2 weeks ago at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Veteran Jim Furyk will also tee off, while Norwegian golfer and U.S. Amateur winner Viktor Hovland provides a fresh amateur face to the field. Mexican hopes rest on Abraham Ancer, one of just 7 Mexicans competing, who has finished strong in early Tour events but is yet to taste victory.
